Birch & Meadow, Orange Powder, 8 Oz

It's been very hard to find a replacement for malted milk going vegan. However, I found it with this! Yes, it doesn't mix right away (you have to let it sit). No, the powder by itself doesn't taste like anything except corn flakes. It doesn't matter to me, as I make it work. It tastes like orange juice when I mix it into water and eventually mixes and that's all that matters. People should expect something not perfectly matching their expectations with a natural product. If they want something they're supposed to have, that's why artificial everything exists. It's time we start looking at what nature tastes like, so we get used to that and understand it. I don't want solid food anyway - my parents pushed me onto it and it's done nothing but ruin my stomach. It's the liquid diet that's served me and continues to. However, I like the clumps - it gives variations in texture. Sometimes I eat it by itself to remind me of corn flakes that I don't eat anymore due to trying to go raw vegan - the high temperatures cooked at isn't healthy - PAH's. It didn't work when I was making my drink - it's better to go with real oj to get muscles pumping in conjunction with the nutribiotic rice protein. That said - I like drinking the oj powder when real oj's not around - as it's hard to access and expensive too! If you have real oranges around you - use that for juice preferably or buy orange juice. Maybe add this powder in to give it a boost - I didn't try that yet. I use it in combination with these for a meal: preferably real oj, but freeze dried OJ powder is ok - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GBNKHVB?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details NutriBiotic – Mixed Berry Rice Protein - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00014DRN2?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details Pine Pollen - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MDLP29M?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details red berry opowder + prebiotics (KaraMD Revive Reds) - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0774ZT2H9?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details COQ10 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B098ZW1BLM?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details vegan collagen production - via bamboo - https://www.amazon.com/Garden-Life-Organic-Antioxidants-Probiotics/dp/B09KCLK45F/

Love this in my smoothies

Having not tried any other bulk-packed 'real-orange' powders for comparison, I am not certain if my impressions are based simply on the nature of the product, or a specific brand. Regardless, I imagine this product being useful as a food/cooking ingredient, at the very least. That said, however, as a simple drink mix, to my taste, this product had a rather strange/unexpected profile: while it does taste like orange, it also has an odd, 'malty/soy' sweetness to it that I, again, did not expect, and that I do not prefer as an orange drink flavor. I have had small packs of TrueOrange, which taste good/orange-ey, and which I've used as water-enhancers. However, I am not sure if that brand is available in a bulk-pack, and if it is, I imagine it's more expensive. So yeah use this product as a food/cooking ingredient. It probably makes damn good carnitas, since all the major Mexican/Latin foodies put weird things in their carnitas 'simmer,' such as both oranges (normal) and, say, evaporated milk (kinda weird IMO)....but anyway, this orange powder already tastes like that so there you go : )

Eight ounces of orange juice contains 2 tablespoons of solids when reduced to a powder. Two tablespoons of this powder reconstituted with 8 oz of water produces a thin orangish liquid with minimal orange flavor that is overly sweet rather than "sweet and tart." I would judge whatever small amount of orange juice it was made from was heavily cut with maltodextrin and then likely had some sugar or other sweetener added as well. Unless you are dying to add some more ultraprocessed food to your diet and want some that is fairly tasteless, I would give this a pass. However, if you do buy it, I would note it mixes quite easily if done the usual best way of reconstituting a powder. Measure out your powder, add a small amount of water, just enough to let you stir it into a thick paste, then add another small amount and mix again to get a thick liquid. At that point, add the remaining volume of water to reconstitute, mixing well as you do so. A wire whisk is nice, but vigorous stirring with just a pair of chopsticks will do it.

Ordered this because the orange powder I was using became unavailable forever. Does not dissolve easily. (AI doesn't recognize negatives, so the ai says I have said it dissolves easily. No it does not. And I put it in my EmergenC with a lemon packet and the previous powder easily dissolved with the lovely boost from the fizzy chemicals in the EmergenC. It does eventually dissolve and it tastes good. However, took the star off because vendor knows that light destroys some of the nutritional value of the powder. This does not cease once it is put in the clear plastic bag that it's packaged in. The nutritional value will continue to decrease unless you place it in a light-proof container. I have put mine in another bag that is solid and not clear. Resealable bag is not enough, need to protect the product from both light and air. This is the best option I could find and I'm glad to have it, but I would rate 5 stars if it was packaged differently. Edit: guess they really don't want that 5th star! Doubled down on the clear packaging! Repackage if you buy!

I use this orange powder with my tea. It dissolves nicely in hot water, no clumps.

I have no idea how this was made. My guess is, reduced pressure drying. The water is removed, and unfortunately, the volatile essential oils leave too. The essential oils are important to the taste and odor. If this was freeze dried, maybe it would be tastier. You get all the rest of the orange juice. Fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and some of the flavor. I was hoping for more. The powder is a bit hard to reconstitute with water. I see no directions about the powder to water ratio. It absorbs water slowly, and disperses, if you give it some time. A blender helps. In the end, I added... Vitamin C powder for tartness, some sugar for sweetness, and orange "KoolAid" for enhanced flavor. Then I had expensive orange drink mix, that tasted pretty good. At least as good as cheap orange drink mix, maybe a bit better. The powder stores well, so food storage maybe a use for it. Some people have said it is good for baking. I may try that next. Nice option if you have a use for it.

Great quality. Will buy more
