Changed my evaluation - Finally found the real problem
We were getting nasty, undrinkable water with an odor from these filters. We have well water. My water softener was on the fritz and these filters cannot handle my well water directly. After fixing the water softener, the odor is gone (temporarily). I got a TDS meter from Amazon. There's no doubt that the filters are working. Post softener PPM around 220 ppm before the RO unit, 22 ppm after. 22 ppm is quite satisfactory for drinking and cooking. My raw well water ppm is also around 220. The softener substitutes salt, but does not lower PPM, which stays about the same. So the bottom line is I"m getting about 220 ppm (salts) before the filters, and 22 after. Update: Couldn't get rid of nasty water taste, which kept coming back. I finally found the culprit. It was the new icemaker we just put on the fridge. Hooked it to the RO line, but wife turned off the icemaker after it filled. So water sat in the line, and that caused the nasty water smell. Started emptying the ice maker every few days to keep water going through the system, which fixed the problem completely.
