Nice sounding basic unit on a budget
My beloved 1982 Mitsubishi receiver finally bit the dust. I’m a musician, and am pretty picky about sound quality. The Onkyo TX-8220 sounds quite good with my 1982 Yamaha NS4 speakers (6 ohms, about 35 Watts). Plenty of power for my modest living room, but might lack power to drive 16-ohm speakers. I set both bass and treble EQ at +5 for my speakers. Sound is maybe a tad muddy, but there’s good definition, good bass and treble response, pleasant sound all day long doesn’t get “old” on the ears. There is no sub-woofer connection, so it’s just a plain stereo hi-fi for two speakers (with option for A/B speaker sets). Jazz, classical, acoustic styles sound quite good. If you’re into 5-channel techno, probably not for you. Bluetooth connected easily to my iPhone and sounds good; no problem reconnecting so far (after 3 days’ extensive use). FM receiver is good. No USB port. I couldn’t ask for more for a decent unit on a budget.

A little disappointing...WAIT...SCRATCH THAT (15 May 2023)
I was truly excited about this little receiver. It's just what I needed -- a bare-bones basic two-channel receiver for watching TV/movies/streaming video. Minimal connectivity, which is just what I needed. I got it home, took it out of the box, got it hooked up. I figured the easiest thing to do without having to connect a component to it was to just listen to FM. I turned the unit on, and there was a fairly loud humming coming from inside the chassis. Something was definitely going on with the power supply. There should be no hum. I kept the unit on for about another ten minutes to see if the hum would dissipate -- it did not. I immediately packed the unit up and sent it back. Refund came quickly. May try to buy again and see how it goes. Will follow up... FOLLOW-UP: Decided to not purchase another Onkyo TX-8220. I instead opted for the Sony STR-DH590. It has all the features of the Onkyo, as well as additional features the Onkyo does not have. One minor difference is that the Onkyo has a phono input where the Sony does not...and that's ok...I'm not using the Sony for that purpose. But the best news is that I was fortunate to find the Sony STR-DH590 on sale at Best Buy for the same price as the Onkyo here. No problems or issues with the Sony...very happy with the purchase. FOLLOW-UP NO. 2 (15 May 2023): Decided to try again. Purchased the TX-8220. This time, no issues with hum from the power supply. Cannot say enough positive things about this receiver. It has the connectivity I need. No HDMI, but this is not a "home theater" receiver. The DAC has one digital optical and one digital coax input...which is all I need (I have my TV connected via digital optical and my streamer via digital coax). No USB input, but has Bluetooth. Sound quality is excellent, and the rated power (45WPC into 8 Ohms) is plenty to drive my Klipsch RB-81 MkII speakers...among others. Based on my actual experience with this receiver, it's a highly recommended solution for a starter system or for someone who just needs a basic two channel receiver without a lot of bells and whistles.

HIGHER-END SOUND AT A LOWER-END PRICE
First, let me note than I am not Verena, but her husband. She ordered me this Onkyo stereo receiver (not surround sound) for my birthday, after my thirty-year-old Harman-Kardon finally began wearing out recently. The Onkyo TX-8220 (from Amazon) is a perfect fit for our family's love of music on a tight budget! With its reasonable price ; clean sound* ; ease of operation ; digital, analogue, and Bluetooth inputs ; subwoofer and various other outputs ; and plenty of power to drive two speaker pairs, this Onkyo is divine! *When I mention "clean sound," I mean 100 dB (signal-to-noise ratio) of clean. Considering this measurement, then a normal listening level between 50 and 80 dB would have essentially NO distortion, not even a semiconscious degree of it. // The sound output is well-blended across the listening frequencies, showing excellent musicality and stereo separation. Bass response is good enough, though far better with the addition of a sub. // Overall, the Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver (integrated amp with built-in radio tuner) offers the sound, features, and build quality which are atypical and unexpected of a unit at its price point. Truly, it emits much higher-end music reproduction than its lower-end cost would suggest! I now have a current-model Sony 10-inch subwoofer helping my indoor mains, and an identical one (safely weather-protected) with the outdoor set. My Onkyo provides great sound both inside and out! [NOTE: This receiver actually provides only one subwoofer output. However, since a powered subwoofer provides its own amplification, that output may be used safely and effectively to connect two powered subs simultaneously, by plugging a high-quality "Y" adapter cable into it, and then running a longer cable from each side of the "Y" to each of the two subs. The two longer cables should be identical to each other. / Also, it bears noting that a receiver's subwoofer jack is not switched; it's always potentially active except with headphones. Thus, it's wise either to keep the subs' on-board "off/on" switches readily accessible by hand, or to add an external switch for each woofer. There may be occasions when you'll want only one playing at a time, or neither.]

Digital Audio Suddenly Stops Working
This is a great buy for the money. Sound is good, easy to set up and use. Bluetooth connected easily. However, after a few days of use the sound suddenly stopped working on the digital audio from the TV. Tried to troubleshoot it, myself, for two days with no results. While I was calling for Onkyo support the sound suddenly started working again while waiting for a tech. So far the audio is working great again. Unless this becomes an ongoing problem, I would recommend.

Onkyo TX‑8220 — Solid, reliable, and works exactly as expected
I’ve had zero complaints about the Onkyo TX‑8220 itself. It’s straightforward, dependable, and delivers great sound without any fuss. Once it’s set up, it just works. One important tip for streaming apps: If you use Netflix, make sure your Netflix audio output is set correctly. Before I figured that out, anything I tried to watch on Netflix made horrible noises, and I kept adjusting my TV and receiver settings thinking something was wrong. Turns out the issue was entirely on Netflix’s end — not the TV, not the receiver. After switching the audio format in my Netflix settings, everything worked perfectly. This also fixed the sound problems I was having with Amazon movies that play through the Netflix app. Since making that change, I haven’t had a single issue. Bottom line: The receiver itself is great. Just double‑check your streaming app’s audio settings if you run into weird sound glitches. Once that’s sorted, the TX‑8220 performs flawlessly.

It works, and sounds pretty good.
This review is on brand new item. So far pretty happy with this. I had a big roll of vintage pure copper 12-gauge speaker wire and some banana plugs and made the most solid speaker connections I've ever done. I have played some records and a few CD's on an Onkyo DX-C390 and it sounds very smooth. My Klipsch R-41M speakers are not made for much power and sound good with this rather underpowered receiver, which is just what I wanted. I also have an old subwoofer hooked up and it sounds good on the line inputs. That said, this receiver has nice bass and a subwoofer is not really needed in my opinion. Bluetooth connected to my phone, but that's all the Bluetooth I tried. Hoping I'll be reporting back that this receiver proves durable and works well for a long time. Editing to add that I have questions about the turntable preamp in this unit. When I am using my turntable, I have to crank up the volume on the receiver to over level 35 to get any decent sound. On the other hand, my CD deck only needs receiver on about volume 10 to put out good sound. Edit: I hadn't noticed at first, but I now have questions about the turntable section of this receiver. I notice when I'm playing an album, I have to crank the receiver volume up into the 30's to really hear the music. It is extreme volume, and I have to be careful to turn it back down before switching to CD. Maybe there's nothing wrong with the receiver, or maybe I need a turntable preamp, but I thought receivers that have dedicated phono inputs don't need preamplification.

Very good receiver until it stopped working
My experience so far has been great. The sound is very good and has a decent warm sound to it. It has a sub out as well and two digital inputs. My previous receiver stopped working which was a Sony strdh 190. I thought that receiver sounded okay for the price but the Onkyo blows that receiver away. I had not realized how much of a difference $50 could make in regards to the sound quality of an entry level receiver. I had only assumed that the Onkyo cost a bit more because it had a sub out and digital inputs. I don't use a subwoofer and still the Onkyo sounds better than my previous receiver. Update: Reciever sounded great until it stopped working. It has a two year warranty from onkyo as long as you bought it from a authorized dealer which Amazon as the seller is. This was good news until I found out that the nearest authorized onkyo repair shop was two hours away from me. Unfortunately onkyo will not pay your shipping costs to ship it to the repair shop. So that is an additional $31.00 that I had to spend. However onkyo will pay to have the product shipped back to you from the repair shop after repairs are completed. It's still in the shop and not happy that it lasted less than a year before needing to be repaired. Update: I received the reciever back supposedly fixed but it was not. It was noticeably vibrating and you could here it vibrating. The shop said that they couldn't hear anything wrong with it and had it on for 24 hours straight. This completely floored me because it was so very noticeable and completely impossible to miss. I contacted onkyo and after a lot of going around in circles they had it sent to a repair shop in New York and they paid for the shipping. The New York repair shop identified the problem as a faulty transformer and replaced the transformer. This took many months to finally get fixed but it is fixed now and there is absolutely no vibrating. So my advice if you're going to buy it make sure you have a good onkyo service center in your area. I will specifically not buy an onkyo product again because it will always first be sent to the closest authorized repair shop. For me in Maryland there is only one who runs his business out of a garage and seems to focus more on high end vintage products.

A Hidden Gem of a Receiver
Excellent receiver for small room set-up. I needed a receiver to replace my burned -out yamaha receiver (a 2000 purchase that served me well for 20+ years). I needed a receiver with multiple analog in puts and out puts as I also run my dvd and blu-ray players through the receiver as well as a dedicated cd input for a cd player(I purchased an Onkyo C-7030 cd player at the same time I purchased this Onkyo receiver). My speakers are B&W DM601S2's purchased at the same time as my Yamaha and still sound brand new. My listening room is about 10x20 in size so I was not in need of an overwhelming receiver. This receiver fit the bill perfectly especially after I found out that this humble receiver also included a sub out which sealed the deal. It is very rare to find such a feature on a basic entry level receiver. I also purchased an acoustic audio psw8 sub to go along with this set up. Now that this system has been with me for a couple of years without any problems I decided it was time to sing its praises. The sound quality is exceptional and easy on the ears and my cd collection sounds magnificent. If there is any quibble I have it is having to turn up volume when watching videos. I haven't figured out why but perhaps it may be due to the mastering process for the dvd's and blu-rays that force me to have to increase the volume. This is a minor quibble since I primarily listen to music. So, if you are looking for a receiver for a small room set up I highly recommend this fine receiver.

Very good DAC and AMP section at this price point. Lots of inputs and features for modern stereo
I bought this receiver to use with my computer for music and games, thinking I could use the optical output on my PC and get better sound through the receiver's dac, and also be able to use some nice, non-amplified speakers I had kicking around all in one go. This turned out to be a really good idea. The speakers go to tectonic levels with minimal distortion. Games and music have way more punch and snap, and there is more insight, clarity and detail with everything. I use it mostly with headphones and music and gaming is night and day from my computer's build in sound card. Very happy $350 CAD well spent. This receiver is sort of a nostalgic piece - a classic 90's design but with digital inputs. You don't see many good stereo receivers anymore - especially with 4ohm ratings unless you go with something used or spend lots of money on Hi-Fi gear. To add I don't use the bluetooth but I tested it and it was super easy to pair with my phone. Excellent buy!
