Are the speakers connected by standard speaker wire? Is it possible to splice in additional speaker wire to move the speakers farther from the unit?

The speaker wire is connected directly to the back of the side speaker. Don’t believe you are able to add addition wire to make it further.

can I record from cd to thumb drive or sd card?

Yes CD to USB or SD card is one of the features of this system. The output to the USB or SD is in MP3 format.

Does it have treble and bass control?

No there is no control of sound, but the speakers have and excellent sound.

It seems like the CD malfunctions on a lot of the reviews. Had this problem been addressed?

Mine is a little over a year old, and I have mostly used it for LPs and cassettes. I tried using it to play a CD recently (a produced one, not just some random recordable disc) and it doesn’t even sound like it’s trying to spin the disc, it just says “READING” for one second and then says “NO DISC”.
