Is there overvoltage control for 12 volts input instead (to the dummy battery)? Will this break the device over time?

The product information says the dummy battery has over voltage protection, but is not clear whether this is only in reference to a transient spike over 9 volts. I would guess that it would eventually fail if continuously run off 12 volts, rather than the 9 volt adapter it is shipped with, but this is only speculation.

Would this work with the Nikon Z50?

The Nikon website shows that the Z 50 takes a different battery.

is this compatible with the D90?

A quick google search shows that the D90 takes the EN-EL3 battery. So you're looking at a completely wrong battery system here.
