Will this fit for iPhone XR

Should fit an XR. I use it with an iPhone 7 and there is about 12-13mm more expansion possible. XR is only 7mmm larger than a 7. Fit is secure, and I wouldn't worry about it falling out

Plastic. Its very similar bordering on identical to other (cheaper) grips you can get on Amazon. Its absolutely fine and works as expected.

Will this work on a galaxy note 3?

Hi Pezzer41According to the Samsung website the dimensions of the Galaxy Note 3 are H151.2 x W79.2 x D8.3mm (H15.1 x W7.92 x D0.83cm), the Manfrotto Smartphone Clamp supports phones up to 8.4cm in width so it shouldn't be a problem unless you have very bulky case on it which may make it a tight fit. It’s possible to mount an external mic?

You can’t with this Manfrotto universal clamp. You need the newer one: Manfrotto Universal Smartphone Clamp, Pro Version (MCPIXI) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07K6GHL24/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-pt0EbKKTT7VN I have used my RØDE videomicro mic with it.
