This really works for car oil changes
I bought this Silverline Oil Extractor Pump for changing the oil on my car. High mileage means that I do oil changes every 10 or 12 weeks and jacking up the car and draining the sump is a real chore. This pump does exactly what it claims. You lower the clear plastic suction pipe down the dipstick hole as far as it will go, pump the handle at the top (it's like a bicycle pump) and oil rises up the tube and into the jug. When the jug is nearly full, which only takes a few minutes, you unscrew the suction tube which releases the vacuum and pour the old oil into a waiting container using the convenient handle. Then, if there's more oil to extract, reconnect the suction tube and pump again. When the sump is empty you can hear a gurgling noise as air enters the tube, like reaching the end of a McDonald's milkshake. The pump extracted as much oil as I would expect to collect from the sump drain plug in a conventional oil change. When the pump was delivered there were two suction tubes of different diameters in the box. Both were tightly coiled and I had to spend some time warming them gently with a hairdryer to straighten them before first use. In fact, assuming you've warmed the engine before the oil change, the pipe becomes quite flexible as soon as the warm oil has passed through it but you might struggle to get that coiled pipe down to the sump unless you've straightened it first. It's a good idea to clean the suction pipe and jug after use so that you can see the oil flow clearly next time, so before packing it away I sucked up a little petrol with it and swilled it around the jug, which left the pipe and jug as clean as new for next time. It would have been useful to have some markings on the side of the jug to show the litres of oil extracted but I suppose you could add these yourself with a measuring jug and permanent marker.I'm lucky that on my Volvo the oil filter is at the front of the engine and easily accessible from above so I didn't have to jack up the car or get underneath at all. However if your oil filter is on the sump you may still need to jack up the car to replace it which means the time saving won't be as much.In conclusion, this tool has made oil-changes a much quicker, cleaner process for me and I shall use it every time. I recommend this product.

Excellent alternative
Does a great job. Like many reviews I concur that for a VW Golf Mk 6 (possibly other cars) you will need 1 meter of 5mm tubing to fit through the dipstick channel. I used a nebulizer hose, so would imagine any type of 5mm hose will do. The omission of this hose when you buy it is the only reason I gave it 4 stars. I managed to remove 4.1 Litres of oil (4.3lt is the top mark for my car) this took around 30 mins with the last 10 mins or so requiring more pumping and manipulating the hose around the bottom of the sump. I got bored removing such small quantities at a time, so it could be possible to remove all your oil if you are the patient type? I momentarily considered this approach before remembering that life is too short :)Would highly recommend this product to anyone not wanting to raise the car up, remove the ridiculous abs engine under tray (cover) and mess around with sump plugs/washers.Word of caution! The bottle holds 4lt but in real terms this will be around 3.5lt as you will stop drawing oil so as not to compromise the base of the valve/pump. Then you would decant into a suitable tray before starting the process again to remove the remainder of the engine oil. It will be best to leave the hose in place within the dipstick channel and detach the hose at the bottle itself. As I found it difficult finding the bottom of the sump again after removing the tubing. The heat from the hot oil had softened the tubing somewhat making it coil more within the engine, I still managed it, but next time I will leave the inserted hose in place, doing the connects and disconnects at the bottle itself. Just a heads up, hope it all makes sense? I could probably have removed all 4.3lt of oil had I did this, I suppose I will find out next year.

It sucks... but its meant to!!
used this to suck the oil out of my mk4 Mondeo. The only problem was that i had to buy some thinner tube (6mm outer diameter 4mm internal diameter) as the supplied tube was too thick to fit in the dipstick. It took a while to actually suck the oil out but i hadn't warmed it up and i was using a very narrow tube so that was expected. If you need to suck fluid out of something in a clean way then this is it. people who say that the bottle collapsed didn't read the instructions. you don't continuously pump the top, you use this to draw a vacuum in the bottle and then let the oil fill the bottle until it slows then pump a bit more and repeat. This was cheaper and safer than a jack and axle stands and i got 5.5 liters of oil out of my sump which is apparently how much it holds so a fine job.

Great product for the price
I needed a vacuum oil extractor and read all the reviews here, I was concerned about the comment about not enough vacuum, poor build quality but to be honest units from other manufacturers were a lot more expensive so I decided to give it a try and I am really impressed! Some observations:Yes the hose has to be straightened, I filled a basin with hot water and sucked it up, that took all the kinks out of the hose. Some reviewers said it was very slow, I drew 4 litres of pre warmed oil out in the time it took me to find the filter wrench in the garage, topping up the vacuum on 3-4 occasions. The advert on Amazon fails to mention it comes with a lifetime guarantee which you sign up for on line.Made changing oil a lot cleaner. On the negative side:The instructions which come with the unit are wrong. The small piece of wider hose should be fitted to the main hose and this should be fed through the cap, its this wider hose which gives you your seal, if your loosing vacuum pull it through a little more and you will get an airtight seal.I've only had the unit a few days therefore I can't comment on its durability but my 1st impression is that it is great value for the money.

Disasterous purchase!
Bottom line: don't buy this product until quality problems are solved!Like others, I was tempted by the low price compared to the standard PELA pumps, but I too found this an awful product. I worked on it for about an hour: repeatedly dis-assembling and re-assembling, checking seals, trying teflon tape to improve potentially bad sealing, and getting my wife to check that I was not being an idiot and missing something simple. I did get it to suck ONCE in this prolonged process, pumping about a litre of really water quite well before it stopped working again, never to recover. Clearly, it CAN work, but seems incredibly temperamental due to poor design/manufacturing. This would explain the mixed reviews on Amazon...The problem with the one I received seemed to be in the pump section itself: everything else formed a good seal, but the hand-pump unit simply failed to work correctly. Unlike another reviewer, I could find no way to access the internals of the pump to "invert the incorrectly-seated valve seal" which he found to be the cause of his similar problems. The pump does inded suck out air on the upstroke, but then seems to leak copiously (undoing the upward pump effort). The result is that frenetic pumping can make fluid move slowly along the tube, but this is clearly NOT correct operation. The one time it did suck properly, the water I was using to test it zipped along the tube: the problem was that this was only achieved once for about 10 seconds in the hour of effort I spent!Annoying that a £20 product from Amazon was so very poor.

Worked fine once I fixed it
Bought this to do my own oil change on my skoda fabia, having read the reviews I thought I would test it on some water before using it with oil to check it worked correctly. Unfortunately it didn't, it was simple enough to fix, once the circlip on the base of the pump was removed it was obvious the rubber piece inside was upside down, the rubber nipple should have been through the hole in the silver piece, once reassembled it worked fine. Very poor quality control from silverline, although this works fine I won't risk buying any more of their products.

Decent enough syphon action, but take your time with it.
After reading alot of the reviews on this I was quite sceptical about it but bought it anyway. As i slightly overfilled my corsa when i did an oil change it was important to get the excess oil out without draining it all out again!I used to larger bore size pipe (10mm) and it slipped straight down where the dipstick goes easy! I was surprised i thought it would be to narrow. However success! The strength of the syphon action is fine, you just need to take your time with it. REMEMBER IT WORKS ON SYPHON ACTION AND WILL REQUIRE A FEW PUMPS TO GET IT GOING BUT BE PATIENT!I deffinitly reccomend this product, it has saved me from potentially fking my engine with to much oil!

Pleased overall. May need thinner tubing for your car.
I bought this so I could carry out more frequent oil changes on my RX8. I was a little dismayed to note that the 5mm pipe was too wide to fit all the way down the dipstick. A quick trip to a DIY store and 90 pence later equipped me with a 3mm diameter tube which fits perfectly in both the 5mm tube and down the dipstick. So, if you have a thin diameter dipstick be aware that the tubing this comes with may not fit as is.Once I began pumping oil quickly started filling the container. I walked away and came back ten minutes later to find about half of my oil extracted, so I was rather pleased with that. In order to get the other half I did have to keep pumping the extractor, otherwise it would run out of vacuum quite quickly. It's not a huge container so it does need continual attention. All in all, the process was a little slower than I'd expected, but I was just happy to save myself having to lift the car, so a few minutes spent pumping is a small price to pay. Please overall.
