A #1 New York Times bestseller! A Kirkus Book Prize Finalist! A New York Times Best Children’s Chapter Book the Year A Wall Street Journal Best Children's Book of the Year Caldecott Medalist and New York Times best-selling author-illustrator Jon Klassen delivers a deliciously macabre treat for folktale fans. Jon Klassen's signature wry humor takes a turn for the ghostly in this thrilling retelling of a traditional Tyrolean folktale. In a big abandoned house, on a barren hill, lives a skull. A brave girl named Otilla has escaped from terrible danger and run away, and when she finds herself lost in the dark forest, the lonely house beckons. Her host, the skull, is afraid of something too, something that comes every night. Can brave Otilla save them both? Steeped in shadows and threaded with subtle wit—with rich, monochromatic artwork and an illuminating author’s note— The Skull is as empowering as it is mysterious and foreboding. Review: Perfect Spooky Addition to Any Elementary Library - I bought this as someone who’s building a portion of my home library to being a “fun aunt,” this was a perfect addition. This is a perfect for early readers, there’s a lot to engage with when reading and a silliness in the spookiness that is so cute and endearing. I bought it for the art alone, but the story matches perfectly. Review: Sweet story, lovely art. - This was a lovely story. Perfect for little ones who have a taste for ghost stories, but not too scary for sensitive ones. The theme about friendship is sweet but not didactic, and the art is lovely.

One of the best kids books I’ve read
Read to my 3.5 year old daughter as soon as it arrived - three times in a row due to popular demand. At its core, it’s a story about friendship and courage. It’s kind of dark but in the sweetest way. The style of writing and illustrations are perfect. Enjoyable for kids and adults. Absolute winner for anyone with a tiny goth.

Not too spooky
My 9 yr old read this book to me. I picked this book because it is a “chapter book” format with less intimidating length of text. This book is great for a second grade reading level who wants to read something spooky. Not too spooky, as there is some amount of silly mixed in. The story stays mysterious but was a joy to read. Don’t skip out on reading the authors note at the end. Leaves an open-ended prompt for creativity and gives a bit of history of the tale!

Absolutely charming book with great illustrations
This is one of the most charming books I’ve ever read. I love that every turn of the page finds another wonderful illustration. I could not recommend this more! I am not a “reviewer” of products normally, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to tell others about it. You won’t regret the purchase!

Had my ADHD son LOCKED IN!
I've never watched my 5 yr old son enjoy a story more than this one. He's always loved his books and bedtime stories, but The Skull felt different. This book is 4 parts & 100 pages. He was captivated by the story. He was asking questions. He would have me pause to tell me how much he was enjoying it. The illustrations are hauntingly gorgeous. The book itself is a perfect size. The story really is very sweet and a good lesson to be kind and brave enough to face your fears. It's the perfect amount of "spooky" but not quite "scary" for younger kids. All I'm saying is, if my 5 yr old son with ADHD can sit down and pay attention to the story the whole time, I think most other kids will find enjoyment out of this intriguing story as well.

A wonderful story for older kids and adults.
This is my favorite book to read with my 4th graders at Halloween. We read it and then I give them different prompts to write about: Create a backstory for the skull. Create a backstory for the skeleton, Create a backstory for the girl... etc. It leads to some interesting stories and lots of great writing practice.

A hauntingly gentle story that balances spooky charm with warmth and heart
The Skull is a wonderfully unusual children’s book - an adaptation of an old folktale the author encountered years ago while in Alaska. It tells the story of a young girl who runs away and befriends a skull, and while that premise sounds dark on the surface, the story is anything but grim. It’s a thoughtful, slightly eerie adventure about friendship, courage and finding comfort in unexpected places. The tone is perfectly balanced, just spooky enough to capture a child’s imagination, but never unsettling. My seven-year-old daughter loved it immediately; the blend of mystery and kindness struck exactly the right note for her age. It’s the kind of story that sparks curiosity rather than fear, and one that invites discussion both during and after reading. The illustrations are stunning - expressive, textured and full of atmosphere. They complement the narrative beautifully, helping to create a world that feels both strange and inviting. The book itself is also lovely to hold, with high production values that make it a pleasure to read and display. One of the most interesting parts comes after the story, in the author’s own notes. He explains how he partly forgot the original folktale and reimagined it over time - a reminder of how stories evolve as they’re passed from person to person, and how our memories shape the tales we tell. It’s a beautiful reflection that adds another layer of meaning to the book.

Really cool book
Adorable story, I got this book for my niece for Christmas, she was fascinated with skeletons and skulls earlier this year. I really enjoyed the story when I read it. It is dark but ends on a light note.

112 pages / early-chapter book with fairly large font short text.
read it with my three kids of different ages, and we all found it interesting and engaging. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story has a fun, slightly spooky charm that kept everyone intrigued. However, I didn't enjoy the number of unanswered questions in the story. It focuses on what happens to the characters but leaves their backstories unexplained, so children are left to guess how things came to be. While some might find that mysterious, I personaly prefer stories that connect all the dots.
