Is it worth upgrading from Fritz 12 to Fritz 14? Are there any added features please?

Fritz 14 Special Edition was a good price for me when I bought it from Amazon. I have not got Fritz 12 but each new edition should be better than the last. I like Fritz 14 SE and I use to be in my local chess club but Fritz 14 has a strong engine and the program can beat me on most levels. Sorry I can't be more helpful but if you need a strong chess program I think Fritz 14 SP is.

Is this software compatible with a 64-bit machine?

I had this installed on a Windows 7 OS on a Dell laptop which was 64 bit. It does run on this laptop, but I honestly wouldn't buy this version of Fritz. The game frequently hung-up and crashed when games were played. I eventually decided not to play games against Fritz 14 SE, and only used it for analysis in the background while playing against other older versions of Fritz. 
As a stand-alone chess game the Fritz 14 SE software can only be described as a failure, and cannot be recommended. Don't buy it!

I want to play my friend via email, but don't see that option in the description. Can you do that?

I don't think you can play by e-mail using Fritz.  But instead you can play by e- mail free by going to the "Gameknot" site: https://gameknot.com/

Question 4

Can you set up opening positions and play from there? Would be nice to be able to practice the openings that i'm weak at.

Yes, you can set up any position (opening, middle-game, endgame) and get Fritz to play it from there and evaluate who's winning at each subsequent move, and 'by how much' it thinks they're winning it gives a score of, say, +0.5 if it thinks you're a little bit ahead, +3 if you're way ahead, or, say, -3 if you're way behind.
