Easy to fit, works well. Cheap and good. Recommended. You may need some tools and help to remove your old gas lift.
Ok, a gas lift for your office chair isn't glamorous, or trendy, but when my office chair started to slowly sink each time I sat on it, I knew the hunt was on. After measuring the extended length and the upper and lower diameters, a quick search on Amazon threw up plenty of results.I selected this one, mainly because it was fulfilled by Amazon and I get free delivery with Prime.Removing old gas lift: This is a little less straightforward. In the end I placed my chair upside down on the edge of a table ( seat cushion on the table ), and then used a small lump hammer to knock off the wheeled base. Next I had to unscrew the seat cushion to expose the top of the old gas lift. Using an old screwdriver and a hammer, I was able to knock the old gas lift out.Fitting the new gas lift is much easier, simply placing it thicker bit first into the wheeled base, and then placing the chair on top. Job done.I feel vindicated for not taking out the over-priced "warranty" from Staples. They wanted £40 to cover repairs! This replacement gas lift at less than £10 saved me that expense.

Still going strong after 2 years, but I initially had a lot of difficulty fitting it - see instructions in my review
Update Aug 2018: We've about 5 of these in the office for over 2 years now. None have failed, so highly recommended. This gas lift seems fine, but I've only had it fitted for a few weeks so far. I'll update this review in a few months if it's still working fine. Mine was purchased from seller 'BiMi' - I suspect the quality may well vary depending on the seller. It's important to check you get the right length; this one is 9"; the part to measure is the length of the main black body of the lift - don't forget that some of it is hidden inside the star base of the chair. It doesn't have to be an absolutely perfect match length wise; slight differences just mean the chair minimum/maximum extensions will be slightly higher or lower.I had a lot of trouble fitting this; the supplied instructions were useless for me, and it took a number of attempts (and a lot of watching useless youtube videos where everything had been pre-loosened) to figure out how to do this. I've now done it for 5 chairs so I feel this is a approach that should work for other people too.You need: penetrating oil (I used WD-40 Specialist Penetrant Spray 400ml ), floor coverings, mole wrench/locking pliers (I used Stanley Locking Pliers 9-inch Curved Jaw), lump hammer, blocks of wood, ear defenders, safety gogglesRemember that these gas lifts can be dangerous due to the compressed gas inside. Wear goggles etc and take extreme care when doing the steps marked [caution].Steps are:1. Remove any arms from the chair2. Cover up the floor/carpet; the next steps can get messy with little parts covered in oil/many years of dirt falling out3. Remove clip at bottom of gas lift and separate base vs rest of chair4. Place chair upside down on a desk/workbench5. Give piston a few whacks against each side with a hammer/mallet [caution]6. Position chair base upside down7. Add penetrating oil around the both piston in the chair and the lift in the base8. Wait for the penetrating oil to do it's work (at least a few minutes; I left some of them overnight and gave more than one dose of oil)9. Tighten on mole wrench onto piston, tap mole wrench once or twice with hammer (attempting to rotate the piston), remove piston with rotating action [caution]10 .Support base upside down on some blocks of wood, so there is some gap between the lift body and the floor. You might think you can manage without this step. I certainly thought that. My actual experience is you really do need to firmly support the base.11. Place block of wood over bottom of the gas lift. If the lift doesn't protrude through the chair base, you may need to add a socket or something as a spacer.12. Hit block of wood with a lump hammer, hard, several times. Now onto reassembling; fairly obvious:13. Make sure to put any decorative column onto the piston.14. Insert piston into chair15. Insert gas lift/chair into base16. Sit on chair to force both ends fully in (just normal sitting is fine).17. Verify gas lift works

Superb value, needs very slight mod to fit.
I have been looking for a good replacement gas strut for my Steelcase Leap chair for some time as the original had started to let me down slowly during the day, so I had to keep lifting the seat to get comfortable. I saw this strut advertised and for the price I thought I would give it a try as it wasn't a huge amount to lose if it didn't fit.The biggest problem I had was getting the old strut off but eventually managed with my son's help, fitting the new strut was a piece of cake, the only problem for me was that on my particular Steelcase Leap chair, the small plastic 'pip' on the top of the gas strut (that makes it go up and down) was a little too long, meaning the chair would not stay up.All I did was gently file a couple of millimetres off the top of the plastic pip until I could sit on the chair and it would remain in position. At first the operation was a little 'sticky', but it soon settled down and I have to say I am extremely pleased with my purchase, I no longer get that 'sinking feeling' and the chair is now much smoother and stays in position beautifully.A very good purchase and an absolute bargain in my eyes. All you need is a small file and a little patience, and a visit to YouTube to see how to change it. Excellent.

New chairs for old!!!
Found this product purely by chance, whilst searching for gas cartridges for my weed burner on Google.Over the years I have thrown away a number of office chairs due to the gas lift mechanism failing, what a waste. Six months ago I spent £200 on a chair from Staples. The other day I found myself sinking slowly to the floor, yet another gas lift broken. Anyway, I bought 2 of these from Charg-e for just over £20 including delivery. This has proved to be an excellent purchase. The 9" gas lift is a good size for most people. If you are over 6' tall I suggest you get one of the larger sizes that this company also sells. To replace a gas lift mechanism you will need a hammer, a block of wood, a large mole grip or other large wrench capable of opening to about 1.25-1.5 inches and some WD40 or similar, and possibly an Allen key to fit the bolts that fix the bracket to the underside of the chair.Upend the chair and support it securely. Spray WD40 around both ends of the gas lift mechanism then leave it for a few minutes to work in. Place the block of wood on the bottom of the gas lift mechanism and give it a few sharp hits with the hammer to remove the castor base. Remove the 2 or 3 plastic collarsIf you can access the top of the gas lift with your grips, clamp the grips to the gas lift and tap it with the hammer to rotate it from the bracket under the seat. If you cannot access the gas lift you will have to remove the bracket that is fixed to the underside of the seat (these are usually fixed with 4 'Allen' type bolts). To fit the new gas lift simple put it into the castor base, replace the plastic collars and finally place the seat unit on top. The whole job should take no more than about 15 minutes. There were no instructions with the gas lifts, however there is an excellent video on You Tube showing you how to replace these. Please note that, as far as I am aware, this gas lift mechanism fits most office chairs, however I am unable to confirm that. Please ensure you check your own chair for compatability.

Excellent value, very easy to install
When I replaced my desk with a kitchen worktop, I discovered that the couple of inches of extra height (so I could slide standard two-drawer filing cabinets underneath it without resting the worktop on them) meant I was working in a very uncomfortable position with the computer keyboard. I decided, not without fears of wrecking the chair, to replace the gas lift.I found a how-to you-tube video that made it easy. It took ten minutes to replace the existing gas lift, working slowly, and all you need is an adjustable spanner or mole wrench, a hammer and possibly a drop or two of WD-40 or light oil (I didn't need the oil). The gas lift arrived promptly, and works perfectly. I can now type in a position that suits me, and there's even an extra couple of inches to spare. The chair gives a little when I sit on it (I'm heavy!), but it's stable and solid in use. I've been using the chair now for about three months, and I'm delighted.Summary: I paid close to £20 when I ordered this from on Amazon, and thought it was great value. I see the price has now come down to below £12. Thoroughly recommend this product. Oh and the best you-tube video to watch is called How to: remove gas cylinder with a pipe wrench. [...]

Not Great
was nice and easy to fit but has a tendency to just start dropping if you dont have it at max height all the time.so if like me you have it halfway it starts to drop slowly over timeit's cheap so you get what you pay for with this gas lift.

Great product saved us getting a new chair
We thought that we would have to replace our home office chair as it kept lowering when sat on. I measured the old gas lift and found that I needed a 7 inch replacement. Before ordering I checked the reviews and saw that one person suggested getting a slightly longer replacement. I opted for the 9 inch replacement. I am so glad I did. The lower height of the chair is now at what would be the mid point of the old 7 inch gas lift. But importantly the longer gas lift now raises the chair to the correct height with the desk and it is still not at its full extension. So hopefully no more sore necks and backs. Impressed with the quality. As to fitting the instructions are reasonably clear. I did have to use a wooden mallet to hit the base of the old gas lift to remove it from the legs. I used WD40 as the instructions suggested. Within a couple of hits it came off. Removing it from the base of the chair took a bit longer. I soaked it in WD40 and left it. The gas lift would not come free by hand. Do not try to remove the gas lift by striking down on the top of the gas lift. It is better to hit the plate below the chair which the gas lift goes into. But to do this you may need to remove the plate from underneath the chair. The plate was held on by four bolts which were very easy to remove. The plastic cover which goes around the old gas lift was too short because of getting a longer gas lift. I appreciated this was a possiblity when I bought the gas lift. The new gas lift is totally black. The photo on Amazon is incorrect as is shows a silver top. I am more than happy that it is totally black.I would suggest that when measuring you consider getting a taller gas lift. Overall great product and not too difficult to replace. I would certainly recommend you buy one as it will save a fortune in replacing an officer chair.UPDATEA few weeks on and I am still totally happy with this gas lift. We have had no issues. It is a 100% recommendation and a easy way to save on the purchase of a new chair.

Rescued my otherwise perfect chair but don't expect help
I wrote BIMI twice for customer service and both times got a disappointing response which said nothing and referred me to the website. I took a chance and ordered it anyway and am glad I did. Although the job wasn't as straightforward as their website's quick video lead you to believe it's not too bad if you have the correct tools. Primarily you need a pipe wrench and a rubber mallet to twist the piston that enters the chair. I attached the pipe wrench 1/3 the way from the top then tapped the handle with the mallet and was able to remove the chair from the top of the piston. However, I was unable to dislodge the piston from the base of the chair. I neglected to spray with oil before hammering at it which could have made a big difference. In the end I reused the housing of the old piston by removing the clip and washer from the bottom and pulled out the BIMI piston from the housing. I then inserted that into the existing housing that was wedged in the chair base the put back on the washer and clip at the base. I've been using the chair for a day since the replacement and I can't get over how nice it is to set a height and for it to actually stay there! I'm oddly proud of myself that I fixed it and didn't need to throw an otherwise good chair into a landfill. I'll probably get another 5 years out of it thanks to this cheap replacement part.EDIT: I'm raising this from 4 to 5 stars. Despite the lack of customer service and the install might not be simple the fact is this cheap part rescued my perfectly good chair. It's been a couple of months since the install and the product itself is great and is still at the same height I set it at so it at on the first day so it deserves full marks.
