Science is vital for every inhabitant of today’s world, and being scientifically informed and literate is a crucial part of any child’s education. Science can seem daunting –- especially as scientific knowledge advances so quickly –- and this volume is the perfect purchase for any family. It will bear repeated use by all the family from 10+ through the teenage years. Fully updated for this new 4th edition with the very latest facts and data; clear text and more than 1000 photos and illustrations will inform and amaze. Review: Short and to the point - Each chapter is short and to the point. So while it covers a ton of science stuff, it does not go into detail much at all. But I knew that when I purchased it. So as long as you understand what you are buying ahead of time, you should like this encyclopedia. It gives an overview of MANY topics and gets right to the point. The reason I like this and am giving it five stars is, as a homeschooler, I am having my middle schooler read anywhere from one chapter to several chapters a day, and the reason it varies is, if it is something we've already studied, he reads it as a review and moves on. If it's something I realize we haven't covered much or that we covered early on and he doesn't remember, we stop and spend some time on it, find other resources about it from either the library or internet, and once we've covered that topic more in-depth, we move on. In other words, it's a great review. But it is a HUGE book. So it will last us until high school, maybe longer. The content will soon be below his reading level (if it isn't already) but we will continue with it because it Is serving as a great review the way we are using it. Review: Comprehensive and well-written. - My family already had the Usborne Science Encyclopedia, but it somehow felt inadequate for our homeschooling. I bought this Kingfisher one after checking some recommendations. So glad I did. It is well-formatted, well-written and attractively laid out. The text is neither too light and brief (like elementary-grade texts) nor too dense. My kids will find this useful for school. It is a nice starting off point for research and study. Even my husband and I are enthralled by this book. We love books in our home, and the Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia will be cherished for years to come.

The science spine for Well Trained Mind homeschoolers
This is our science centerpiece book for our homeschooled grammar stage kids. The plan is: we read a couple of pages appropriate to grade level (first is biol; second is earth sci/planetary sci; third is chemistry; fourth is physical science/computer science). The kids make a timeline of major events in science history (invention of microscope; "discovery" of gravity, etc.). We then head to the library for more books on the subject (ooh, dinosaur books...). Later, it's reports or dictation (again, based on grade level) and, after a couple of weeks, on to the next topic. This is a great science book to use as the basis of your curriculum because it's all there in one book. Rather than purchasing a different curriculum (with worksheets, etc.) for each grade, this book is used for all four years. Greatly reduces your costs! Good book, well put-together. See Well Trained Mind for more info on homeschooling your kid. If you're not homeschooling, this book is a great way to cement the cracks in the education your kids may be receiving. Quite frankly, it's a great way to learn stuff YOU might have missed.

Solid text
Excellent text with tons of information and vibrant pictures and illustrations. Came with some minor damage on the edge but nothing too bad. Will be purchasing another.

Science in pictures & concise, easy explanations (does it get any better?)
This is a book I wished I had had as a child. Science comes alive. My boys carry it around and casually read it, sharing new and exciting things they learn, and yes, they are generally new to me too. It allows the interested to see the vast topic of science in an unintimidating way. Add it to your library - this is our second copy. The first one was worn out!

A Treasured Memory
This is one of three books that our children used so heavily that front cover was missing and the pages were barely holding together. We bought this new copy to have available for future grandchildren so their parents can tell them how much they loved this book when they were little.

Great science reference book for the home library
So glad I purchased this for our home reference library. Love the way it's laid out and all the information. Saves us trips to the library and gives my child another bibliography reference for her science papers.

Good book for your young ones...
Good book for my 8 year old boy. He like the book a lot. Lots of information's for kids and adults. One star down because of the price I pay but good investment.
