Ninja, running around in long skivvies.
I was skeptical about ordering anything wool because of that...you know...the itch. But after trying Under Armour and reading and watching about wool products, I really was hopeful about merino wool. Fit and finish: Out of the box, these bad boys are good to go. When I tried them on, I walked around and thought, "ok, here comes the itch" (enter delayed reaction). Although I felt some itch, it's not as bad as I expected, but I got over it. Some people will be more/over/hyper-sensitive to merino wool, especially if it's going to be 100%. Other products they might try are a wool/nylon or wool/poly blend which might be more comfortable. For size, I normally wear a 34 waist and a 30 inseam pants. Minus33.com size chart says large...I guess I should've ordered large, but I ordered medium instead. The mediums fit just right. Now if you;re a dude who's got a lot of junk in your trunk -front/back or both- you might wanna go large... I wore these for a week with little activity, if you include shovelling snow in 25F weather, before washing; and there was no loss of warmth. It's not so warm that you feel cozy, but just right where your knees don't start chattering. At the end of my work shifts and before I went to bed, I'd change out of them. As far as wicking away moisture, the -33 did a better job at wicking away moisture and odor without losing warmth compared to the Under Armour cold gear. The UA Cold Gear will wick moisture but you will get cold. If I could give you a rough numerical estimate, I'd tell you, -33 will wick 20% more moisture than UA. -33 will retain 20% or more warmth than UA, especially with little/nil activity. For washing, I used liquid detergent in gentle cycle, but will opt for trying shampoo (wool=hair). Then hang dry. Overall, for more sensitive skin, try a wool/poly blend. For less sensitive skin, I highly recommend -minus 33 Minus 33 Kancamagus - little itch, good price, good fit, good finish, good quality. 12/24/2013: I'm wearing the set that I washed. I didn't notice any loss of fabric or fraying. It's 16F outside and I got poly cotton pants over the Minus 33. I'm good to go -not too cold, not shivering- just standing/pacing around smoking a Newport just after 2000 (8pm). I'm at work now, it's after 2300, it's 73F inside and I'm toasty and not roasty. Merry Christmas.

I bought the ( XL) I'm 6' - 230LBS - WAIST 36 INSEAM 33 )( And as far as for me the inseam is fine as a matter of fact i believe
Hi , To start off i washed them ( inside out ) on delicate and rinsed them twice and then i hung them to dried ( no dryer ) . With that being said , I did not try them on before washing . So as far as shrinkage ? I bought the ( XL) I'm 6' - 230LBS - WAIST 36 INSEAM 33 )( And as far as for me the inseam is fine as a matter of fact i believe i have a 1'-2' to play with after washing ). . My first impression is really soft ( easy on and off ) . They did not make me warm but they kept me warm / with no sweating and very comfortable ( no kidding ) and they moved so well with me they were a pleasure to wear . ( I bought the top as well ) . What i mean by that is after wearing normal ( cotton ) thermals after a while they stretch out of shape and start to sag / clump up . Not so with these , They kept there shape ( and i slept in them ) and in the morning still nice . ( black shows everything ) So be careful what you'r around . They are light weight but comfortable and comfortable ,Not hot but comfortable . The bottoms when you pull them up high they sorta bind by your butt , In other words there not high waisted . And the top is a little bit longer than normal which is nice because can tuck them in and no butt crack showing . And they dried over-night hanging them .As far as for me the fit for my body type , was not tight or loose just about right . ( I'm keeping them ) . I hope this helps .Thanks .

Initial Review - Update to come by end of 2015
***This is my initial review after receiving the package and wearing the product. I bought this for hunting season in PA as well as skiing season here in NJ, and will be able to test it further and update this review by the end of the year. I bought this product because I am tired of looking and feeling like the Michelin Man during hunting season with my puffy down clothes and multiple layers. (Bought together with Yukon Men's Expedition Crew Top). I want this to be my base layer, and then simply wear my hunting pants over it. Skiing I've never had a problem wearing just underwear and ski pants and actually wind up sweating because of the movement and I am always warm in general. But something about sitting in one spot while hunting really lets the cold seep in. I won't be able to update this review with how well it performs until the end of 2015, but here are my initial thoughts: Packaging: The packaging is simple, compact, and came with no issues. Fit: I'm 5'5, 140 pounds and have a waist size of about 29/30 inches. I bought a small, and both these bottoms as well as the small Yukon top fit perfectly. Tight fitting (how I usually like my clothing, especially base layers), but extremely comfortable and hugs the body well. Warmth: I noticed as soon as I put these on, my entire body felt cooled down. This to me is a good thing, as it means instead of just trapping heat and moisture, the wool is allowing my body to breath while still retaining heat. To confirm this, I took everything off and felt the inside and they were very warm to the touch. Quality: The quality of the product is very good. The material feels good, looks good (good enough that you could actually wear the Yukon top in public with a nice pair of jeans and not feel strange about it). However these bottoms are not to be worn in public without a layer over them - unless you want people staring :) So far, I am very satisfied with this product. I will update when I can, and if it performs well I will be ordering more of the tops in different weights for the different seasons (even summer) because I really like the quality, fit, comfort, and breathability. I can only imagine seeing myself wearing these bottoms in winter, so I will stick with these and if they pass the winter test I would definitely order more.

The best long johns ever! EVER.
I got a pair of these like 7 years ago for an NYC winter, but got the wrong size (I got a small). This was not the company's fault, I just didn't know my proper size; even so, they were wonderful and I loved them, even repaired them when they got a bit of a run after a few years hard wear. Now that I have the right size though, my god, they're EVEN better. So soft, so warm! I actually can't use them for their intended purpose of being under my work uniform because they are TOO warm for inside my store! I still feel the wind out here on the winter prairie with them under my jeans, but I did not expect anything short of thick leather would stop that. They keep me warm to and from the car and will get a lot of use because they aren't too warm for fall and spring. Not to mention, the truly winter weight version of these, the 'expedition' Minus 33 sells, is far too expensive for my budget at nearly $100 a pair. Granted I'm sure they are worth every penny, but those are pennies I just do not have! If I did though, I would definitely buy a pair of the expedition weight AND a pair of these AND a pair of the lightweight ones too!! This company is wonderful and their products have been consistently well-made, sturdy, and well worth the price. I hate wearing wool but these are just so soft I don't even notice it's wool at all! And they come in the nicest box, wrapped in the old-fashioned way: with tissue paper between the folds!! It's so classy! I love it. Definitely baby these with cold gentle cycle, no dryer, no softener, and washing them in a mesh lingerie bag. Believe me, it's worth it! You'll get like 7 years out of them at least! And this is coming from a shivery little southerner who now has to live in the frozen Minnesotan wastes. These are definitely my favourite pair of winter underwear and the only ones I truly feel are worth the expense. My fleece-lined tights from the cheapo store are hot while also not being warm enough, the coldpruf pair I got last year is just a low-content merino/poly blend that also doesn't breathe while being too cold (and being really baggy!). These breathe and fit perfectly without being binding! Even when they're too hot I don't notice feeling sweaty and even with windy days I still feel warmed up from them. I'm super glad I was finally able to replace my old pair. Thank you Minus33 y'all're the best!

my husband will never go back to poly
i bought this for my husband. he is outside a lot for his job, or for hiking, and he rides his bike even in very cold weather. i knew he deserved the best, so i sprung for these for christmas. and he LOVES them!! i got him the Large, he wears 32 X 34 pants. i was worried they would be too baggy, since he is tall and somewhat slender, but he said they fit perfectly. not too loose, but not super tight. they keep their shape well. he likes to wear them around the house by themselves because they are so comfortable. he said they are super duper comfy- soft, warm, nice weight, yet breathable. they are good for being in and out of doors in the cold weather without being suffocatingly warm when you do go inside, yet keeping warm in frigid temperature. the waistband is nice and thick, too. i had been wanting to buy these for him for over a year, but he said "nah", figuring they cost so much and he has a stockpile of other long johns; but as soon as he tried them on he said he wished he would have listened to me sooner!! these will also last i believe, they seem very well made. he said they just "feel" so much nicer than cotton/poly waffle weave or other poly long johns (he has over a dozen pairs!). they also don't get stinky like polyester ones. he really wanted to buy me a pair, which i know coming from him meant that he really does like them. i can't wait to try them myself. but either way, i can definitely recommend them!! buy them for yourself (or the guy in your life!). they are worth every penny!

Great feel, keeps you warm/cool, doesn't smell, but could maybe last a little longer.
I bought these to wear as a base layer for a number of purposes: 1) motorcycling (under my riding pants) 2) cold weather, under jeans 3) under ski pants They perform pretty well for all these uses. I wore them on the motorcycle in cold and hot weather. Under a pair of mesh pants, they wicked sweat away very well keeping me cool, and in cold weather they kept me warm enough without being too warm. They're very comfortable, and don't itch as one might think wool would. Though, I would recommend running them through the wash before wearing to soften it up a little. They are machine washable and dryable. As for construction, they held up pretty good, considering I wore them on a just about daily basis for the last ~10 months (putting them on/taking them off twice a day for my commute to work on the bike). The last month or so they started developing tears/runs in the knees and calves (where they tend to rub), so I just purchased another pair to replace them. I would wash these about every week or so, and they never really smelled that bad. The wool did a great job at not giving bacteria a place to live. All in all, I would (and just did) buy these again. If you're doing really cold-weather expeditions, you might want to get the medium weight equivalents from Minus33, but these work well in both warm and cold weather.

Excellent Product!
We are hunters and we have a big vacation planned in the near future going to Yellowstone National Park in the Winter. I live in Louisiana where our cold is a wet cold. But in Montana it is a dry cold. After reading many informative documents on how to dress for the cold and the extreme cold in Montana, I knew I needed to purchase some clothing made from Merino Wool. Merino wool wicks perspiration away from the skin. I don't need my my husband getting out in the cold and getting wet only to get pneumonia! Keeping dry helps to avoid hypothermia in the winter. I ordered my husband the tops and bottoms in the Mossy Oak Camo pattern in large. The fit is perfect. He will be using these as his base layer. This bottom is lightweight not bulky like I thought it would be. It is very soft and comfortable – not itchy at all. When I think of wool, I think of the heavy, thick, itchy, bulky material but not this 100% Merino Wool. The stitching is done perfectly. I washed his as soon as I received them in cold water and tumbled in the dryer on low. He has tried them on and is very pleased with them. He has not had the opportunity to wear these in the cold yet – still 100 degrees here in Louisiana but he has been wearing them in the house just to make sure they fit and are comfortable. They have passed that test and they are very warm so he can't wear them for long right now. I highly recommend this product. I paid full price for this item but a day after I purchased these, the price went up.

Best base layer on the market
Merino wool is great stuff. I was hesitant about the price, but it's well worth it. The material more maintains your body temperature than keeps you warm. When hiking, it will wick moisture and cool the skin but keeps you warm for long sits in cold weather. It mitigates the need to constantly change clothes during a western hunt. For those of you who have hunted in the West, you know that the battle for comfort during 50 degree temperature swings can be brutal. The fabric arrives with a slight perfume smell, but after a few washes it's scent free. All Merino Wool I've ever owned has a smell for the first few washes, including the "wet dog" smell when wet for the first few washes. Amazingly, when it dries, it's scent free. In short, don't be discouraged when you pull it out of the washer the first few times and it stinks! As far as thickness goes, it's about as thick as Under Armor Cold Gear, but much more stretchy. For fit, I like clothes a bit tight, and this is about as perfect as I could hope for. It is certainly larger than corresponding sizes in Under Armor clothing. As a side note, you want the Merino base layer to completely touch you to reap the full benifits of the material. Update: I found a Amazon warehouse deal on another pair. Of course, they are great, but I wanted to mention that the warehouse deal worked very well. It appeared the garment had been washed once without being turned inside out, so it had a few pills on the outside... It's a base layer, so one time is no biggie to me. But it does bring up a good point: turn all Merino Wool inside out before washing. Also, it should be noted that this heavyweight garment is quite a bit heavier than the First Lite comparable garment. I own both, and there's no difference that I've been able to tell in quality (Minus33 is cheaper), but this heavyweight stuff is another class heavier than First Lite. The Allegheny EXP from First Lite is 330 g/m2 and this stuff is 400 g/m2. That insulation measurement seems very consistent across these two brands, so keep them in mind when ordering. Even so, the weight of the material needs to be taken with a grain of salt if you haven't used Merino Wool before... It regulates temperature, not traps heat. The moisture wicking features actually work in wool, so when you sweat, it cools, but not too much. It really does take getting used to if you're used to traditional insulation layers.

Great purchase
It was a great purchase. I can feel the difference a specially during cold days. Merino wool is so much better comparing to any other materials, it's warm in cold and when it's hot on the train or inside a building it's not a problem. All together it was a good choice. I bought size M and it fits perfectly.
