Is the size 20 for example, equivalent to English or American measurements please

size 20 is the UK sizing. The sizing for the US and other countries differs from that of the UK. Sewing patterns bought in this country eg. McCalls, Simplicity . New Look.and others have the British sizing and details on the reverse of the packet, Measurements for fabric etc are usually given in imperial and metric measurements on the reverse of the packet

Has anyone tried lowering the neckline?

I have been looking at mine as I would like to do this soon. I don't see why you can't lower the neckline to suit you. A deep neckline should be possible.
