Hi David, No need to select the color. The AB12 comes with all 3 plates so that you can select which one you would like.

could this be used to mute speakers in a room? Only one amplifier running low volume music in medical office, we want to turn of speakers sometimes

Technically yes. As you are only running one amplifier, pressing the button would switch the input to the 2nd amplifier. Since you wouldn’t have an amp connected, the speakers would mute.

Can you tell which state the switch is in? (which speaker/amp it's toggled to?)

The button appears pressed in on one selection and out on another. You just have to remember which is which there is no other visual indicator.
