War Horse is a thrilling and spectacular production based on the celebrated novel by Michael Morpurgo. Winner of Olivier, Evening Standard and Critics' Circle Awards, it has captured the hearts and minds of everyone that goes to see it; children and adults alike. Phil Grabsky and David Bickerstaff have been invited by the National Theatre to film the intricate process of putting on this extraordinary production, as it makes its way from the National Theatre to the West End and beyond. With exclusive access to the actors who work these astonishing life-sized puppets, we learn exactly how the internationally renowned Handspring Puppet Company make these animals come to life. Throughout the film, director and creator, Michael Morpurgo gives us candid insights into his inspiration for this production as we film him at his home in Devon, surrounded by the fields that he drew his creativity from. This film will be more than just a behind-the-scenes documentary; it will be visually stunning and shot entirely in HD, will bring the magic of this extraordinary puppetry to the big screen. Phil Grabsky and David Bickerstaff's filming style is poetic and delves beyond the surface, revealing the passion and determination involved to make this production the success that it is. Review: War Horse - As soon as I found this on desertcart I ordered it immediately. I also ordered the live action movie. I went to the Lowry Theatre in Liverpool to see the show. I went with my local visually impaired group. We went backstage to see the costumes and puppets. I got to meet Joey and his puppeteers. One thing that stood out was that you don't notice the puppeteers. Joey and the others horses are so realistic. The puppeteers are absolutely amazing. This is why I bought this dvd. Because I loved the show and wanted to learn even more. I think everybody should go to the theatre to watch the show. You really do think Joey is a real horse and you genuinely don't notice the puppeteers. I cried watching it too. Review: War Horse - making of - I live in London but not keen on west end shows but recently saw War Horse at the new London theatre after being highly recommended. Hubby + I just loved it + both cried liked the rest of the audience, so very moving. If you visit London to see one show this is just a huge must. The documentary has lots of info, interviews with the puppet makers, the cast + the man who wrote the book the play was based on. After watching bought another for mum in law who has also seen + loved

Very good to learn the back ground of War Horse and the puppeteers admirable work!
A most interesting and very well-done movie BUT what I would really like is the original movie that was shown as a life performance from the national Theatre!! Seems impossible to get which is a great pity as this was an astonishingly great and loving performance! Making the War Horse could only give an idea of the phantastic experience of War Horse, the NT work!

Fascinating
This video of the making of the outstanding production of "War Horse" is almost as stunning as the play itself. If you have seen the play, I think you will be fascinated by this behind-the-scenes look at the making of this incredible play and realize that the art is even more interesting once we know what is behind the play. Anyone who has not seen the production will be intrigued by seeing this video, and hopefully will rush off to see the play and then watch the video again.

Brilliant doco
This DVD presents the whole history behind the making of the National Theatre's production of "War Horse" right from the beginning. I found it absolutely riveting and the actual puppets of the horses quite magical. How the actors coped with these inspired puppets, with sometimes three actors manipulating one puppet horse, was a fascinating journey for us and for them. I have never, unfortunately, seen this play but the DVD makes want to head for London immediately to catch this production, now in the West End, before it finishes.

making of war horse
I had seen this on TV and was in love with it. Being a horse lover, I could see how much attention had gone into putting life into what was essentially nothing! I purchased this for a friend and I am sure she will appreciate it as much as I did. I wish the production was coming to my home town. The DVD is truly stunning, it does come to life more if you understand horses that's my only comment.

Totally awesome
Very inspiring. I've seen the play twice. This DVD makes you realise how much work is involved in the stage production, and the fitness of the actors is phenomenal. There is a lesson there on how the horse whinnies and you find yourself trying it. I recommend watching this either before or after seeing the live performance. I want to go again. Well done everyone.

The DVD, Making War Horse, is just great! This DVD shows what was necessary in making and working with the life size horse puppets appearing in the play. Those involved with the puppets learned---from Monty Roberts, of 'The Man Who Listens To Horses' fame---everything they needed to know about equine behavior. Then they went into action. As a result, the puppets act more like horses than horses do! One of those who works with the puppets said that they have the puppets move around---and even act up---more than actual horses generally would, so that the full idea of horses can come across to the audience. The action definitely adds interest to the play itself, of which a few short scenes are shown. Anyone who has seen or heard of the play, would surely love watching this DVD.

If you ever get the chance to see this play performed live get to it! This DVD is a beautiful look behind the scenes to help further capture the magic that is a part of this ingenious production.
