The 13th edition of this bestselling book is proof of the success of Mary Blewitt's concise and clear style in explaining a particularly difficult skill, and it has been the bible for many generations of ocean navigators. Since this book was first published, the huge advances in electronic navigation have transported most offshore navigators to a world of press-button convenience. However, there is still a vital need for traditional skills when things go wrong: batteries can fail, aerials go overboard, and electronics have been known to get wet. A bestseller for over 65 years, Celestial Navigation for Yachtsmen is a model of simplicity and clarity. The worked examples require only straightforward addition and subtraction, which explains why this book has truly earned its reputation for admirable conciseness and for making a tricky subject easy to understand. This edition has been thoroughly revised by Andy Du Port, the highly respected ex-editor of Reeds Almanacs. 'The ""bible"" of navigation for generations of yachtsmen... worth its weight in gold ' Sailing Review: Sailing into the blue - This book is extremely practical and just what I was looking for to back up my skills when sailing and the electronics are down Review: Five Stars - Quite easy to read and very helpful guide to how to use a sextant for ocean navigation

It is common to praise this as the number one book to get on celestial navigation but it isn't
I know a lot about celestial navigation so this is quite a useful reminder of various key points. My son, with whom I go sailing quite a bit, knows very little about the subject, so the real question is: in the (more common than you might think) event of an electronics failure (meaning all the electronic navigation equipment is unusable) could my son (who is a clever lad but nonethless ignorant of celestial navigation) find his way home with just this book and a sextant? The answer, I would posit, is not a chance. The reason is this book is not take you through the whole thing from the bottom to the top of the subject, step by step, with all of the real working and accessible almanacs and sight reduction guides. I don't know if I am able to say this on here but if you are seeing this review then clearly I can: the one book to get on this subject that would absolutely allow my son, or yours, or you or me, to get home from anywhere if nothing else works and you only have a sextant left is: 'Commonsense Celestial Navigation' by Hewitt Schlereth, which is available via Amazon.

Good introduction
This is a good introduction to celestial navigation and has clear worked examples towards the end. The diagrams are basic and could be improved to provide greater clarity.

Contents is great, would give a paper copy a 4star, this e-book not all that user friendly

Indispensable.
What can I say? This is the classic introduction, refresher and reference work for the matter. For any serious sailor I would suggest you get this small book and develop or refresh your celestial navigation skills. In these uncertain times, governments come and go, peace ebbs and flows, and with it the GPS systems we have come to rely upon so blindly. One things remains constant however - the stars, and this book will unlock your ability to use this resource when all else fails.

Brief but Accurate
This is a small book that is packed with just the essentials of celestial navigation for sailors. This is just what I wanted but it may leave others unsatisfied and wanting more. Fortunately, there are tons of other books on the subject but I suspect that none will come close to this book in information density. Read carefully and repeatedly.

Práctica
Manual básico para la navegación astronómica que guía sobre el uso de la técnica de posicionamiento. No es un libro de texto, sino un manual de aprendizaje para navegación. El único inconveniente es que esta escrito en inglés.
