Why would anyone buy this one over the older model considering that the older one is faster in both write and read speed?

I think there is a mistake here. This product is described as the new version of extreme pro 128 gb https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00HR7FWUC/ref=psdc_430554031_t1_B01HXR4OEK but I remembered that it was another product that was linked as the new version so I checked out the sandisk website and it appears I was right. Question 2

Formatting the 64gb version as ntfs, i'm getting 192mb/s read and around 118mb/s write (sometimes peaking at 135mb/s). is this normal?

In a nutshell, yes, perfectly normal, if anything it’s actually a bit on the fast side. There are many factors in the equation that can effect speed, file types, USB sub ports, too many to mention here.

Is it made of plastic or metal - need it strong for hanging end off my key ring and don't want end snapping off

What is the situation for returns on this? I bought one not too long ago and it broke after 2 months of use and i couldn't return it.
