unmatched quality and precision
Considering person preference varies, Some are more purist and desire the most consistent grind and the size and power of the grinding motor ranked at the top. Others prefer all the bells and whistles and convenience above all else. Given there isn't a "perfect" grinder, you should consider exactly what you want out of a grinder and rank accordingly. For me, this is a near perfect grinder and think the solidness, precision, and power rating of the motor paramount. This is also what I searched for when I chose an expresso grinder by choosing Rancillio Rocky grinder. Both have brought me much brewing pleasure when my beverage is enjoyed. Additionally, there really isn't a combo grinder that does coffee great and espresso great. They are targeted at 2 completely different grinds and dual use never really works out without sacrifice. Yes, I have to hold the on switch for the 28 seconds it takes to brew my 28 oz. of coffee each morning, not a big deal. I have a digital timer to count which would be more precise than some half baked rotation time wheel my last coffee grinder had. I also use this as a shot timer for my espresso, so if a consistent flavor is desired, this is the only way to go short of using a scale. For the record, I have never had static and totally love the fact that the baroscopic glass is used over plastic, I will take that any day. I do love this grinder and would purchase it all over again and it does compliment my Macmaster brewer. Everything in my coffee/espresso collection is the same stainless look so just icing on the cake.

This Coffee Grinder is NOT the one for you!
Unfortunately, the quality of this Moccamaster Burr Coffee grinder does not come close to the quality of Moccamaster's coffee maker. When I received this coffee grinder, it was heavy and appeared to be well made...wrong! Owned for just one week, loaded the hopper with it's FIRST batch of fresh coffee beans, within less than a minute, it locked up, cleared the beans, unscrewed the hopper, no luck. So I re-boxed the grinder and returned to the seller at my cost. Seller rep received and instead of accepting the locked grinder, they blamed me and said that the grinder had what appeared to be "dirt" in the grinder that indicated to them that the grinder showed signs of "previous use". I only owned it a week! If it showed signs of previous use, then I was sold a previously used grinder! I appealed, but no luck. Received 50% of what I paid ($300), only $150 on the return and shipping for me was $37 UPS, so in the end, lost cause. Going with a blade grinder instead. Moccamaster needs to go back to the drawing board...

Rock solid coffee grinder.
Technivorm did again. They took the concept of grinding coffee stripped off all the bells and whistles of modern appliances and focused on building a really really good coffee grinder. Beans in and press the button, it's dead simple to use. The grind setting will accommodate drip coffee makers, french press and even percolators. Grinding for espresso machines isn't a thing in the Technivorm universe though and if this is what you're looking for then check out the Baratza and Breville grinders. The KM5 is reasonably quiet. I say this because my previous coffee grinder was blade grinder that would wake up the entire house. The sound on the KM5 has a much lower pitch that doesn't shatter nerves. The grind quality is very consistent due to the flat steel burrs and the bean hopper holds enough beans to get me through a week of morning coffee. Build quality is excellent. The case is all metal and is surprisingly heavy coming in at 10 lbs. There's a bit of a static issue with the grounds but this issue can be resolved with a couple of drops of water over the beans in the hopper. If you want to get fancy you can get a water mister and give the beans a quick spritz and stir and that will stop the static in its tracks. (This trick works most other grinders too.) One one last thing I would comment on is the lack of color options. It would have been nice if Technivorm had the same color options as their coffee brewers. I have a Moccamaster KBGV that's midnight blue and my grinder is the most unexciting shade of white. My OCD self will be grinding on this issue every time I enter the kitchen. But then again this is actually a good problem to have. I could be drinking out of a Keurig.

Love it
Sept 2024 - I just ordered this grinder from Amazon last week and have only been using it for about 4 days now - however I really like it. I had been using the Fellow Ode grinder for last couple years - which a friend had given me. It worked fine - liked the design, was fairly quiet however it had many things I didn't like about it. Moving to this new grinder is like night and day - some of the benefits over my old grinder: 1. Match my moccamaster brewer - so they are cohesive. 2. Much larger hopper that has enough weight from the beans to ensure the fall down into the grinder without always having to be pushed like my older grinder 3. About the same noise level - maybe a little louder but not much 4. Solid build - high quality feel to it 5. best of all - super clean output - my old grinder did not have a good seal between the grinder shoot and the container so my counter top was always getting coffee grounds on it - hated that! This grinder has a nice tight seal between the rubber container top and the chute - so you don't get all kinds of debris flying everywhere making for a messy counter - zero debris = clean counter top! My old grinder had an auto stop feature - but this grinder requires you to keep pressing the power button to grind - that's fine with me - I kind of enjoy watching the grounds filling the container especially at the high rate this machine grinds. The grounds are all very uniform also - very consistent.

requires way too much maintenance
the grinder works great for a few days and THEN IT BLOCKS ITSELF WITH GROUND COFFEE IN THE OUTPUT SHOUT. Use on a medium grind as suggested by manufacturer. The grinder shuts down and then you must disassemble to clean. If you enjoy home mechanical exercises this is the grinder for you. My Kitchen Aid lasted decades and required cleaning the burrs every now and then, meaning months in between. My new Kitchen Aid is on the way.

Very nice grinder
Technivorm knows coffee! Their attention to detail and quality in a no frills, but visually appealing package is top notch. I'd been in the market for a quality burr grinder for quite some time. I tried another major manufacturer's grinder, but was not happy with the coffee flavor, regardless of grind size. I finally decided to spring for the Moccamaster burr grinder, which compliments my Moccamaster coffee machine nicely. Aesthetically, it's a perfect match and it grinds coffee well too. The machine comes apart easily enough to clean out the hopper and burrs. The stepless adjustment for coarseness allows you to fine tune the grind size exactly how you prefer. The KM5 is relatively quiet and grinds coffee perfectly every time. While it's not the quietest on the market, it's quiet enough that you won't wake up others while preparing your morning brew. It is far quieter than the old blade grinder previously used. The biggest drawback is static generated during the grind process. However, the work around I have found that works best is not washing the glass grinds container after each use. I suppose the residual oils from previously ground coffee assists in limiting the cling. A gentle tap on the sides of the container over the coffee filter releases the few grinds clinging to the sides. Love my Technivorm Moccamaster coffee set up! You don't get automatic settings and timers with Technivorm products, but what you do get is a quality machine that does what it's supposed to and does it well...for a long time.

Excellent Grind Quality, But a Bit Pricey
This grinder produces very consistent, high quality grounds and runs quietly, which really improves my daily coffee routine. The stepless adjustment makes it easy to dial in the perfect grind for different brew methods. I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because it’s on the expensive side for a grinder, and the grind adjustment knob feels a little stiff at first. Overall, it’s a great machine that makes excellent coffee, just not perfect for the price.

So far, so good
Since we recently purchased a Moccamaster coffee maker and love it, I decided to get the grinder to match and they look spectacular together. The grinder seems to be a step up from our Baratza Virtuoso. It also produces a more consistent grind which has resulted in an elevation of the quality of our morning brew, at least IMO. For those who don't like having to hold the button while it's operating, I say "forget it." It's really not a bother because it grinds fast -- about four times faster than our old grinder. Two things I'd point out though. The static is real and a problem IMO. I use a couple spritzes of water on the beans before grinding and that does the trick. I know not everyone agrees with this technique, but it works and I doubt that much water will destroy the burrs. The bean hopper has a very low slope and some of the beans get stuck and require a bit of coaxing. They really should fix this on future models. Again, not a huge deal. I hated the Ode grinder for that very reason, but don't seem to mind it now. Could be because of the clear hopper so you can see what's happening. I think it's a very solid and very heavy grinder and would buy it again. I got it on a BF deal, but then it got even cheaper the next week. I'm glad I got it and do think it's elevated the coffee from our Moccamaster.
