Fun Forge | Monumental Classic | Board Game | Ages 14+ | 1-4 Players | 90-120 Minutes Playing Time

This game has a very specific niche. The target audience are board gamers who grew up playing Sid Meier's Civilization, specifically late 90s early 2000s between Civ 2 and Civ 4. At its heart, it's a relatively light deck builder. The designer has made many little tweaks to the gameplay to give you that nostalgia of playing Civ, from the faction leaders and policies, technology and wonder names, the way the cards are laid out in a 3x3 grid, to the eras and scoring conditions at the end of game. It is meticulously designed remind me what it was like playing Civ series until 5am in the morning just getting that one extra tech, one extra policy. Many people complained about the late game downtime of the game. Even that is completely accurate! The atrocious downtime is completely representative of how late game in Civilization just breaks down and non functional. I would not recommend this game for everyone. There is too much rule overhead, weird pacing, and thematic dissonance for the general audience. I suspect, for many people, they will be either be disappointed in how light it is once they learn it, or find it too much of a hassle for such a light game. If you have any Civ buddies that just happens to be into board games, this will be great fun and hit you with nostalgia even more than proper Civ board games. Complex Civ board games just make me want to replay the video game instead. This one is a thematic game disguised as a deckbuilding Civ game.

Vorweg: Im Video zeige ich einmal das Material und erkläre grob die Regeln. Ich muss zugeben, ich bin mit Monumental nicht richtig warm geworden und das, obwohl ich Civ-Spiele aller Art sehr mag. Die Stadt-Mechanik ist zwar toll (sowohl der Deckbau als auch das Verwenden einer Reihe und Spalte) und der eigene Map-Bau macht Spaß, aber irgendwie reizte es mich nach den ersten beiden Malen nicht, noch eine weitere Partie zu spielen. Zusätzlich zu den im Video angesprochenen Regeln enthält das Core-Set übrigens noch einige Add-ons. Darunter Helden, derer man sich für Geld bedienen kann und Monster, besondere Gegner, die die Barbaren ersetzen. Aber auch all das kann in meinen Augen nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass Monumental in einigen Mechaniken sehr, nun ja, basic ist. Es kann aber gerade deswegen für Leute interessant sein, die eher ein fast-pace Civ-Spiel wollen, bei dem Aufbau und Erkundung & Eroberung sich die Waage halten.

Mezcla un tanto de control de área con deck building. Un muy buen juego con bastante interacción entre jugadores.

Great price on a fun game. But I originally thought this came with minifigures, but it is the cheaper version that does not.
