A memoir from singer-songwriter Madison Beer, chronicling the past decade of her life spent in the spotlight—the ups, the downs, and the in-betweens that you won’t see on social media. Discovered at twelve years old, Madison Beer was one of the first artists to have her entire life documented online. Over the past decade, she has navigated the spotlight as a child, through her teenage years, and now as a young woman in her twenties. In The Half of It , Madison pulls back the curtain to show the behind-the-scenes of her journey, from reckoning with mass hate online and cyberbullying to the time her private pictures were leaked, to battling suicidal thoughts while making her highly acclaimed debut album, Life Support , and her recovery since then. This mental health memoir is an honest and unflinching account of self-love, mental health, and advocacy from one of the fastest-rising musical voices of her generation. It hammers home the point, more striking and urgent than ever, that no matter how close the internet may make us feel to people, we truly don’t know the half of it. A Raw Mental Health Journey: Go beyond the headlines to Madison’s private battles with suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and learning to navigate her BPD diagnosis. The Dark Side of Fame: Discovered at twelve, Madison reveals the truth about growing up online, where every mistake is magnified and your entire life becomes public consumption. On Cyberbullying and Misogyny: An unflinching look at the trauma of having her private photos leaked at fifteen and facing a global wave of shame with no support. Finding Her Voice: Follow her path from a manufactured pop image to a powerful independent artist, fighting for the creative control to write and produce her own story through music. Review: Great book/condition - It came in good condition and idk if it was supposed to come signed but came signed and its just one of my priced possessions now but other than all that great product!!! Review: Very easy read - As someone who doesn’t like to read books this was nice and easy to read and engaging, by the end of the book I really felt more connected to Madison as a human being, and am more of a fan than before.

amazing!
The memoir The Half Of It by Madison Beer shows behind the scenes what it's like to be a public figure. I feel that this is very important because we are often only shown the glamorized side of Hollywood and the music industry. Madison tackles tough topics such as suicide, drug addiction, and self-harm. She describes what it's like navigating therapy and getting professional help while being famous. She mentions what it's like to deal with Borderline Personality disorder. Something I enjoyed about this memoir was how open she was when talking about her struggles and what happened to her in her past. The singer mentions having her private nudes leaked at fifteen and what it was like having to deal with the hate. Something different that I found enjoyable in this book was the journal prompts and the letters from fans. I think that most teens or young adults who struggle with mental health would find this book very relatable and enjoyable to read even if it tackles hard topics.

definitely recommend
I only knew of Madison Beer from being on David’s Vlogs and the podcast, Pretty Basic, which is how I found out about her book. Although I may not have gone through the same experiences as she has, this book made me feel more at peace with myself. It was inspiring to hear how other people, who you may not think struggle with anxiety and depression, get through it. This book left my heart feeling full, it inspired me to spread more kindness, and not be so hard on my self. If you are thinking about reading this book, you definitely should.

Shines a light on both misogyny and internalized misogyny
Long winded review incoming: As a teenager I was raised in a very conservative house by a mother who often criticized other women, especially the beautiful and famous. There was a time when I too might have viewed content about women and girls in the media like Madison Beer through a jealous and spiteful lens, an embarrassing quality I can now forgive myself and my mother for because this is how women were encouraged to perceive each other as a means of survival: as competition (to the benefit of men everywhere). The truth is women have far more in common with each other than a patriarchal culture would like us to believe- hence the reason women have only just begun TALKING to one another (honestly) finally. At many moments I found myself stunned by the similarities in our childhood experience, and the more I read the clearer it became that this trauma and these coping methods are commonplace for women of all backgrounds. I was especially jarred by her description of being misdiagnosed by mental health professionals for having warring personality traits as if this is not the female condition in a culture that demands of us to be all things at once. The truth is, that to varying degrees, being a woman is having a crisis of identity that can have disastrous effects on our mental well-being , whether all women are prepared to admit it or not. For Madison the element of her story that I think could be understood with more empathy is that she had this universal experience exacerbated by the pressure of fame. While I wish beyond adequate description that I had access to the kind of support she had (both financially and via the catharsis of having such a platform) through my own similar crisis, I do not co-sign the “this is the trade off for fame” garbage that public FEMALE figures are especially accustomed to hearing. It was in her description of struggling to look at childhood footage of herself that I felt the most ashamed for ever feeding into any negative stories about her or any other woman in the media, because this was an experience I held as totally unique and a sign of my brokenness and she shattered that misconception. As women we should ALL operate on the assumption that most every woman we encounter will share in much of the trauma that we too have carried in silence and it is in all of our best interests to regard each other with empathy regardless of race, class, etc. I appreciate her awareness that there are more heartbreaking stories out there, especially when it comes to the intersectionality of privilege involved, but when a woman who “has it all” is still not immune to the devastating and let’s be honest LIFE THREATENING affects of misogyny we should acknowledge that as a huge alarm ball and really consider what it means for women far less privileged than her living under the same system she describes. I think she did a beautiful thing in using her platform to call attention to these ugly truths that in the age of the “highlight reel” many of us are inclined to hide.

the half of it
