(Old Model) Seagate Exos 12TB Internal Hard Drive Enterprise HDD – 3.5 Inch 6Gb/s 7200 RPM 128MB Cache for Enterprise, Data Center – Frustration Free Packaging

(Copied from FB) I really liked the drive from the moment I read the specs (not so much the price). While it is officially a business class drive, it's great for consumers too. Especially if you want to max out the spec options And get a 5yr warranty. Installation: Win7 Pro x64, 32Gb RAM, SATA3, NTFS @ 4k formatting IDK if it's my case or what, but this feels a bit (maybe a few mm on each side) larger and required a minor mod to my drive caddy (fully modular case). Once I did that it Snuggly slid in place. Now I don't know if having the 3Tb driver installed for my WD 4Tb drive influenced This installation, but I had no driver issues at all. If you've kept track, then you'll note that during the 3.3Tb drag-drops I was seeing a spike in both RAM and Swap usage. I forget the numbers, but it was like 10Gb VM I believe. Luckily my swap file is on an mSATA (SATA2) SSD (Samsung 850 Evo), so minimal performance hit. I Do have the extreme mode thing active for the SSD, so that may be a factor as it caches to RAM I believe. Mind you, this case is Really ventilated (lots of fans) and each drive has a bay between for breathing room, but they're all sitting at 20-35C. Performance wise, it did marginally above the sales specs at first, but (as with any drive) started to slow down as it filled up or fragmentation was introduced. I think it capped at about 260MB/s % 250MB/s and dropped as low as around 100MB/s % 80MB/s. Considering the drive will be an archive, I'm not concerned really as fragmentation shouldn't be an issue. As some may recall, I had considered other drives and was originally aiming at 16Tb, but this one out with specs, price, and performance. The 2nd in line was the Barracuda Pro, but the data recovery is auto-bundled and likely causing the dramatic price increase. It made no sense to spend $100 more for a consumer drive because it came with a service. When I recover from This purchase I'll be ordering a redundancy drive to be stored externally.

This drive is a beast! After installing it my machine would not boot into Windows. I had the drive plugged into the motherboard which apparently won't handle something larger than 8TB. I proceeded to plug it into my Silicon Image controller card (3114) and it works great. I checked my main board for a BIOS update and there was 1 newer version but the version fixes did not mention this being fixed. Oh, remember, must initialize this drive to Guid Partition Table format. Don't remember what the cut off is but I also had to initialize my 8TB drives this way too. Running Windows 7 still and it has no problems with these drives.

The 12TB drives are really good, quiet and fast. I ordered 4 but 1 was DOA, the other 3 were fine. I decided to do an RMA with Seagate instead of bothering the seller. The full 5 year warranty is in place with all 4 drives so no worries.

Great drive so far. Been installed for a couple weeks. Excellent performance, runs cool less than 35C under full load for several hours. Excellent price point for a drive rated at 550TB/year, 2.5M hours MTBF, 5 year warranty. As of this writing the same price or less than the IronWolf drives rated at lower endurance. Whether or not this drive will outlast an Ironwolf is yet to be determined. Based on BackBlaze's testing data i'd bet they're fairly close. When this drive was registered for warranty with Seagate it came up as a Exos X12 ST12000NM0007.

Clicking from the moment it spins up, straight out of the box, two completely different computers and enclosures. Both have their own independent, completely sufficient power supply. I suspect BuyVPC is just a bad vendor, shipping out some fraction of known-bad drives, as I doubt Seagate is the problem. I've been using their drives on and off for 20 years. I'm including a picture so people know which exactly model--and hopefully no one ever sees this same serial number again. Luckily, it's Amazon and they'll probably take good care of me, but I still can't get the time I wasted back.

I run over 100TB in a home entertainment server. I decided to add on to that server recently with a Drobo 5N2, which holds another 5 HDDs and up to a capacity of 64TB. These 5 drives I purchased represent 60TB that I installed. I loaded half of it already with full HD Blu-ray movies, FLAC music and high res photos. So far they are performing fantastically, serving my whole home, and streaming from anywhere I go. No stuttering, or buffering yet encountered. These drives seem very solid. I may get more! Thank you!

nothing bad to say about these, they work as they should, no loud random noises, havent failed me or had any problems since buying them... i have bought 2 of these over the last year or so. would buy again if they go cheaper in the next year.

I've bought four of these drives, two first and then another two 5-6 months later. I've had no problems and they've been spectacular drives. The 4TB drives are still a better price for the storage size, but they also take up three times more physical space. Edit: I now have 10 of these and all have performed flawlessly!

Don't buy from Amazon, these are drives from old stock, sold through small retailers. Warranty is always a problem for these drives, check on Seagate site the warranty for the serial you get. Returned.
