Large and informative
A big book with plenty of maps. Some are a less than pin sharp in reproduction but I suspect that may be because the old-sometimes centuries okd-originals lack clarity.

Great idea but some issues with the formatting
Utterly fantastic collection of interesting and informative maps, however the constraints of the formatting means i have to dock a star from what is a 5 star read. Many of the maps are works of art in themselves but unfortunately one of the problems with books like this is that many of the maps are reduced in size to fit what is still a large-format book so a magnifying glass is a must if you want to investigate the fine detail. I also don't like maps which cover 2 pages as this means you have to 'break' the spine to see the detail around the middle of the book. Of course this helps offset the size issue I identify as well so I suppose there is no way round it. Still, if you love maps, this is a very worthwhile purchase.

This quality coffee table book presents a wide variety of city maps. Two or three are provided for any individual location what allows the reader not only to compare mapping techniques through time but also the evolution of the urban form. A short text presents each map and, almost in every case, blow-ups are included of striking areas. The cities covered are organized by chapters: ancient cities, imperial capitals, colonial cities, megacities, etc. They include Rome, Jerusalem, Mexico City, Frankfurt, Prague, and dozens more. This proves fascinating for any lover of cities and is very warmly recommended.

Intricate photos of old city maps and info about their origin. A must read book for people who are into urban planning or cartography or just much into such “map” things.
