Nonfiction Phonics Readers Set 2: Long Vowels, Digraphs & More (Single-Copy Set)

So far these are fantastic for my first grader. She is working on digraphs and blends. Moving on to vowel teams soon. I’m an upper elementary school math teacher, but have my early literacy endorsement so I feel like 50% qualified to review these books professionally. I love that they are different than the short paper decodables that my daughter is sent home with to practice each week (we also do those!) But I find that many decodables are just silly; nothing much to do with plot or stories of substance. My daughter bores quickly with “Pat sat on a mat.” In contrast, these books are more complex as far as content. They do have a wider variety of spelling patterns per book, so it’ll be more of a challenge versus the paper decodables that only work with one letter-sound correspondence. But that also means that my kiddo can show improvement over multiple reads. She and I both love the nonfiction format and the great pictures. Overall I’m very pleased with this blend of pure decodable/authentic text.

It is shockingly difficult to find practice books for early phonics learners, and these fit the bill beautifully! The author clearly has a deep understanding of phonics education. I also love that the books are Montessori-aligned. They use real photographs (sometimes photoshopped) and non-fiction topics. Dr. Seuss is great, but sometimes it’s nice to have something a little more grounded.

As a former teacher I am impressed with these books. They aren’t incredibly sturdy- with thin pages and staple bindings, but I love how the books (25 of them!) are organized by reading skill. The set also includes a workbook with an activity page for each decodable book. I would absolutely recommend these for around a 1st grade level reader. This set is not for beginners as it requires some knowledge beyond short vowels- for beginners I would recommend set 1 in this series.

I am a reading specialist and I LOVE these books. I use them with my son. He loves them as well. They are very decidable and great for beginning readers. We started with set 1 and now onto set 2. They do a great job of gradually making the books harder each book.

Beginner friendly

I love these books for my son. As a teacher, I love how they teach about nonfiction topics while mostly following a certain phonics pattern. We have multiple sets of these.

My 8 year old needed help reviewing the basic phonic rules. These books are perfect! He loves learning so these non fiction books are perfect to keep his interest. I have him re-read them and it builds so much confidence. The books are about 8 pages long. One or 2 sentences on a page. Perfect for improving skills without being overwhelmed with a lot of print. I'm going to order another set with R controlled phonics covered.

Love these, the level is fantastic while still encompassing a wide variety of topics and giving great facts. My kids really enjoyed these books.

I bought all 3 sets of these books. They are the best that I have found for decodable reading for kids. The progression is great.

Love this book set but it came with 2 book 10's and no book 11. When I reordered it was the same thing. Otherwise great set that comes with a workbook!

Theses are book books that target a certain reading skill just as they advertise. I just wish they were a bigger book, versus approx 5” by 5”, and had multiple sentences on each page like the jolly phonics little readers do.
