But his clandestine life and precious secrets are threatened when he is caught thieving by the bitter old man who runs a toy booth at the station, and Hugo’s world becomes enmeshed with that of the shop owner and his bookish granddaughter. A cryptic drawing, a treasured notebook, a mechanical man, and a hidden message from Hugo’s dead father are all connected to a place where dreams are made. A heartfelt love letter to the magic of moving pictures, Hugo is a triumph of imaginative movie making and a gift for film-lovers everywhere. This epic Arrow Video edition marks the film’s debut on stunning 4K UHD and comes packed with a bounty of new extras. 4K ULTRA HD BLU-RAY LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS DISCS ONE & TWO – FEATURE & EXTRAS (BLU-RAY + 4K ULTRA HD BLU-RAY) DISC THREE – BONUS DISC (BLU-RAY) Review: Great Fantasy and tribute to the Early Days of Film - This review is for the Arrow Video 4K release. I was told of this film some time ago and became interested in it, so I decided to get a physical copy. Was very impressed with the product and am glad I bought it. The story follows an orphan named Hugo living in the walls of a train station in Paris, France in 1931. Hugo has been living at the station and maintaining the clocks after becoming his uncle's apprentice following the death of his father. Hugo also has a secret project. Before his passing, his father discovered a small automaton in the form of a human. He and Hugo began restoration work on the machine and Hugo continued after his father's death. Hugo survived by stealing bits of food and drink in the busy station all the while avoiding the Station Inspector who would put Hugo in an orphanage if he ever caught him. Hugo also needs to take bits and pieces of clockwork to try to fix the automaton and in taking these pieces, crosses paths with a sad shop owner named Georges. Eventually, Hugo befriends Georges' adopted Goddaughter and together they begin to piece together not only the automaton, but the past of "Papa Georges" and find out that possibly both Hugo and Georges can help each other come to terms with their respective pasts and help heal one another. First of all, this film is visually beautiful and striking. It's a marvelous look into 1930's Paris and gives the city a very romantic and fanciful feel. Clockwork and Mechanical items are at the forefront throughout the film, and one gets the feel that everything in this fanciful version of Paris is part of one giant well-tuned mechanical marvel. Those of you who like the "Steampunk" sub-genre will find a lot to be attracted to in this film. The Directing and Acting are top-notch as well. Martin Scorsese obviously directed this picture with love. Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Moretz are great as the two primary protagonists and Ben Kingsley delivers a great performance as "Papa Georges". Also, look for a fine (but brief) performance by Jude Law as Hugo's father. Lastly, Sacha Baron Cohen gives a fine comedic performance as Hugo's adversary, the Chief Station Inspector. Not to give too much away, but a hidden gem in this film is that it eventually turns out to be Scorsese's loving tribute to Early Cinema, particularly the Silent Films of the early 20th century. As the past and true identity of Papa Georges is revealed, the audience will be delighted to learn that Ben Kingsley's character is based on a true pioneer of Early Cinema, and we're treated to beautifully realized renderings of the makings of the first movies. One will definitely feel a pull towards researching the history of filmmaking after seeing this picture. The 4K package is great. Lots to unpack here as there are 3 discs (4K version, Blu-Ray version, as well as a Bonus Disc) as well as a booklet and poster. The picture and sound for the film are fantastic and although I haven't had time to go through the bonus features, I'm sure they're good. This film was originally presented in 3-D and although I don't have the option to view this picture in that format, it still looks great. Can't recommend this film enough. Great for fans of Martin Scorsese films, Fantasy, Steampunk, and the Early History of Cinema. You won't be disappointed. Review: Imaginative, visually striking & devoid of violence, Hugo is one of Scosese's best! - A true visual feast, Hugo, by master filmmaker Martin Scorsese, is practically made for 4K Blu-ray! The fabulously memorable images are taken up to the next level by the improved resolution and the additional depth of HDR. I love the fact that every once in a while Scorsese ventures away from murder and violence to experiment in other genres. This time he tried his hand at a family film and produced one of the best. It is visually imaginative, emotional and dreamlike, and also filled with excellent performances from child as well as adult actors of the highest caliber. It is ALL done so well! This is a film to please adult and child viewers alike, one of the few films an entire family can watch together and all ages will be thoroughly entertained by. Who would have expected such a thing from Martin Scorsese of all people! This disc set also includes the movie in 3D, and if you still have a 3D TV or have a projector (which usually still support 3D) I will note that Hugo uses 3D far more "artistically" than I've ever seen done elsewhere, composing the images in 3 dimensional space in a manner that is truly masterful. Being Scorsese's ONLY film actually CONCEIVED FOR 3D, he did not waste the medium and made it integral to the composition of the scenes, using the extra dimension very artistically, the way a master classical painter would have utilized 3D if it had been available to such masters at the time. It's a truly phenomenal and thoroughly memorable 3D presentation! Concerning the 4K disc: This 4K Blu-ray looks and sounds excellent (a noticable improvement over the streaming version on both fronts) and comes very highly recommended. As I said earlier, this movie's incredible imagery and fantastic visual sense is practically MADE for 4K! One of Scorsese's most unusual films, and one which is masterfully visualized in every conceivable manner, Hugo is a "must have" for both collectors of 4K Blu-rays and of 3D Blu-rays alike! And you actually get both included together here! Be prepared to be swept away by the visual imagery and emotionally moved by the wonderful story and fantastic acting in Hugo. I couldn't recommend the 4K Blu-ray set of this rarity, a visually spectacular movie with real heart, any more highly than I do!

Pristine quality transfer
Fantastic transfer from arrow video! Seeing this movie on arrow video 4K was like seeing it for the first time. This movie really passed me by when it first released in theaters in 3-D and really didn’t draw me to it. Once I saw yours later when it came out on this arrow video 4K I was amazed that what a great movie it was. I like a lot of Martin Scorsese’s movies but this one I always considered to be just kind of cash grab or something from the studios by having him direct it, but it really is a beautifully shot. Well edited masterpiece of a movie. Unlike Scorsese‘s usual organized crime based storylines- this is the movie with a tiny bit of crime in it but very lighthearted and definitely a great family movie that adults can also enjoy! If you haven’t seen it or only saw it when it first came out in 3-D you should really check it out with modern Dolby Vision 4K. Another great release from arrow video!

Great 4k but better in 3D
First arrow to include the 3D version. Gives a darker monochromatic look to the normal 3D Blu-ray release, which is saturated in colour.

The 3D Version Is Awesome
The opening sequence is magnificent in 3D, maybe one of the best 3D openings to a movie in existence. The first 2/3's of the film are 5 star quality but, unfortunately, the last 3rd drags the overall score of the movie down to 4 stars. The performances by Asa Butterfield and Sacha Baron Cohen make this movie a must see however, despite the boring and disappointing 3rd reel. Of note: this collection contains 3 versions of the film - the 2D and 3D versions, both in Blu-Ray, and the 4K version. All versions are of spectacular visual quality. There is also an excellent booklet (pamphlet?) included for the Hugo fanboys, as well as a poster and a raft of dvd "extras". The 5 star rating is for this entire collection and NOT for the movie itself (though the 3D version is awesome!)

Beautifully filmed ode to the silver screen!
I own this film on Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and then bought this remastered deluxe 4K edition. I am particularly found of QUALITY 3D Blu-rays and although it is my preferred way to watch this film, the 4K Blu-ray brings a more “filmic” quality to movie made to honor our earliest filmmakers. The picture and sound are top-notch and both the 3D Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray are reference discs for mebwhrn showing off the various 4K OLED, 4K/3D OLED & newest 4K OLED televisions in my home. The packaging is also gorgeous so one cannot go wrong adding this film to their home movies collection. You wont regret your purchase!

Must watch masterpiece
I own the original 10 years ago 1080p bluray which at the time was reference quality. This remaster in 4k and hdr is demonstrated quality. A tribute to an amazing story. This is not a movie about a train station, a clock, and a bitter old man. This is a movie about what it is to be a member of humanity. Spoiler alert. Everyone is redeemed by the end. There is no evil or good. There is just us.

Scorsese + Arrow. What else do you need?
A weird film in the context of Scorsese’s work and the Arrow Video library, Hugo is the director’s attempt at a children’s film. Considering his children’s film is about an innovator of early 1900s cinema, I think it’s safe to say there’s a lot for adults too. It’s full of heart, humor, and history. A breathtaking 4K transfer with comprehensive extras mostly about Georges Melies.

Celebrating the magic machine
Martin Scorsese's latest film is wonderful entertainment for all ages, with everything a great family film should have: a warmhearted story with drama and suspense, a cartoonish villain who turns out to be human after all, appealing characters played with just the right balance between simplicity and psychological realism, even scene-stealing dogs and a happy ending. It is also visually spectacular, even without 3D (i haven't seen this film in a theatre). The period detail is impeccable, yet with a strong sense throughout that magic is afoot. Right from the opening shot, the special effects are state-of-the-art and always integral to the story. Yet this is more than a family film. For one thing, it is rich in details that only sophisticated viewers will notice, such as the fleeting apparitions of James Joyce and Salvador Dali. (Unlike Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which is set in the same city and period, this film does not focus on the now-famous artists and writers who gathered there in the 1920s.) But above all, it's a direct celebration of the magic of movies -- specifically of Georges Méliès, who began as a 19th-century stage magician with a brilliant mechanical sense, and went on to discover new ways of using machines to create illusions. This is of course an homage to a film pioneer, paid by a director with an encyclopedic knowledge of (and respect for) the cinematic art and its history. But it's also a strikingly original take on machines, a counterpoint to classics like Chaplin's Modern Times or Fritz Lang's Metropolis, where giant machines represent everything that stifles creativity and life. Ever since William Blake, the vision of the universe as a vast machine has only seemed vastly evil, or at least depressing, to most of us. That feeling also comes across in Hugo, but only briefly, as a fleeting nightmare. Hugo himself is driven by the opposite feeling. As he says in the middle of the film, he is deeply attracted to the idea of the universe as a machine, because machines come without any useless parts, and that means that every life -- including his own -- must have a purpose. His immediate purpose is to fix the mysterious automaton his father has left him -- but that only leads him to a deeper purpose (which of course i won't reveal to those who haven't seen the film.) Entertaining as it is, this film too leads us deeper into the paradoxes involved in human relations with technology. The many extras included on the blu-ray in this combo package offer plenty of insight into the history, artistry and technology behind the film. Viewers who are philosophically inclined will find further entertainment in pondering the paradoxes involved in the meshing of machinery and creativity, perhaps also of illusion and reality. In short, there's plenty here for everyone who likes movies.

Incantevole !
Guardatelo !
