Can one use a different brand trash bag (similarly sized)? I understand that I may not be able to utilize the hidden pocket.

Seems others are talking of a different trash can. The 55L dual does not work with standard 13 gal bags for two reasons. 1.The standard bags are too short pulling bag off lip before bottom of bag touches bottom of can. 2. The opening on the top of a standard bag is too wide so it does not fir snug like it would on a normal can. Itsa real shame a brand with the word Simple in it needed to complicate things by creating a new trash bag size.

Does anyone know of "generic" liners that will work with this?

You could use another bag (and I’ve tried) but it’s just not worth it. You can buy a box of 60 liners (3x 20 pack) from Amazon for $18.99 and they fit perfectly without the sloppy look of generic bags.
