Can you stack these on top of each other? (Providing they are against the wall or a back board)

I clip them together in the back, side by side with binder clips. It makes them more sturdy and stable. I’ve ordered three sets of these for art supplies. I think they are a fantastic value and have made my workspace worlds more functional. The back is sorta hollowed out. Not sure about wall attachment

How deep are the compartments?

The 2.75", 4", 4.5", 4.5" seems pretty accurate. In response to the reviewer that said they should be deeper, I thought that originally, but after using them for a couple of months they are close to perfect. I have a variety of pens, pencils & highlighters in the organizer. A full length colored pencil sticks out quite a bit when it is brand new, but after it is sharpened a few times, it is obvious that by the time it is 1/2 way thru the pencil, it will be totally in the holder. Every pen & pencil is easily seen & very easy to take out & put away. I like the way it works. The very bottom bin is pretty small, but makes a good place for small post-it tabs & lead refills.

Are these sturdy enough to put on a wall either with a screw through the back or (ideally) with a heavy duty 3M strip or 2?

I would say yes. However, the last bin or the 4th pocket counting the top pocket as number 1 is not as deep as the other three. I bought one set then bought a second set. They sit on my table but I would think they could be hung especially with the 3M strip.
