Is this adjustable? Would I be able to staple book?

You can only staple materials that are one inch high or lower. Not adjustable for any stacks of paper higher than one inch.

what stples do i buy. these are thicker

It comes with a decent supply of staples. It will accept different size staples, so I recommend that you use it some before you buy additional staples because it depends on how many sheets you are trying to staple.

Is there a user's manual for this stapler?

I didn't find anyone that came with the stapler, just used own experience and there is a chart on the front side of stapler that what type of staples are needed for the number of pages to staple..
