can it be used to put air fryer on so counter top doesn't get hot?

I have placed a tea kettle with boiling water on it, on my counter top. The counter top was very, very warm underneath. Using one on top of the other might help it stay cooler.

If used as an ironing board "iron rest," can these silicone trivets withstand the heat?

It might work with a light weight iron on an ironing board. But in spite the mysteriously glowing reviews on Amazon, I found this to be a very poor product for its type and regret buying it. It is a thin silicone--the ribs squish down flat when you put any really heavy object on it. The whole idea of the ribs is to keep air circulating beneath the ribs for cooling, and this pad just doesn't do well with a heavy pan or pot. I would never put a heavy hot item on one of these on a counter top or table.

Are both sides of pad ribbed? Or is one side smooth?

Both sides are ribbed but it is obvious you only use one side. There is no smooth side.

Can it be used under a flat iron

Never tried it but I would think it would, it is a great trivet for cast iron pots, etc. I love them!
