BEST Black Walnuts EVER!
Black walnuts have been a key ingredient in my family recipes for 200 years, six generations. My great-grandparents had black walnut tree groves on their NE Kansas cattle farms. Hammon Black Walnuts are wonderful. The best I have ever found. And the price is great. Have you ever tried to shuck black walnuts? 'Not easy' does not describe it. It is hard, messy work. Also, I was not expecting the size of the pieces. Hammon's fancy pieces are 'huge' for black walnuts. Really HUGE ! They are fresh and full of rich flavor. Someone wrote they found them stale. These are NOT stale. Far from it. Black walnuts have a different texture than the nuts one is accustomed to eating. Black walnuts aren't really 'crunchy'. I'm baking up a storm: cakes, pies, cookies, stuffings, plus salads and ice cream. I baked my Lady Baltimore cake last weekend. It's stuffed full of Hammon's Black Walnuts plus one pound of Maraschino cherries and frosted with 7-minute frosting. This is my favorite cake and a family tradition for over 100 years. Thank you, Hammon's and Amazon Prime. Mary

Healthiest Nut! But Not The Tastiest Nut!
I am a health "nut"! Good health in retirement is my highest priority. Black walnuts contain three main components that make them beneficial when consumed โ antioxidants, polyunsaturated fats, and phenolic compounds. The walnuts also contain a range of other nutrients that includes fiber, protein, melatonin, and folate, which is a type of B vitamin. So I highly recommend eating black walnuts for this reason. However, I will say that they have an odd flavor, but it is not bad. I crush them and add them to kombucha, in order to remove anti-nutrients. I do the same thing with chia seeds and other nut flours (as part of a Keto diet) If you are overweight, do some research (podcasts etc.) about insulin resistance, intermittent fasting, exercise program and Keto diet; don't rely on drugs to manage your problem--take the initiative. I wish you good health! FYI: The best thing you could do for your health is to stop eating any sugar. It is poison for your body. I learned that truth from a Chinese Book of Health back in the early 80's.

I love black walnuts, but these taste horrible!
I had bought a small bag of Hammons black walnuts in a natural-foods store some years back, and they tasted just like the ones I grew up with -- a richer, more robust flavor than regular walnuts. So in January of '21 I ordered an 8 ounce bag of Hammons black walnuts from Amazon, and they were good too. At that point I felt confident that Hammons was a reliable brand, so in April of '22 I ordered a 24 ounce bag, but they had a horrible, solvent-type taste and after-taste (as one reviewer said, "like spray paint"). I just came across a one-star review for the 8 ounce size by wild-foods author "Wildman" Steve Brill, pointing out that this horrible taste is exactly what results from leaving the in-shell nuts inside their decaying outer husks. (Note: this cannot occur in "English" walnuts because the ripe in-shell nuts fall free of their outer husks.) Other reviewers describe the nuts as having a "moldy" taste. Nevertheless, the great majority of reviews are quite positive, so I have come to the conclusion that Hammons has poor quality control. Presumably the nuts come from a number of growers and/or wild-collectors, and the company doesn't do enough spot-checking. At today's prices, I really can't justify doing it for them. Several reviewers complain that they didn't get halves. That's because it's basically impossible to get intact halves from a black walnut. The shell's inner membranes wrap around the nutmeat's lobes so that the best you're likely to get is quarters, and even those are rare. This is why I've been buying black walnuts despite there being several trees in our meadow. (Another reason for small pieces: some of the Hammons packages are billed as "recipe ready," meaning the nuts are in uniformly small "chopped" pieces.) One reviewer wonders where Hammons gets their black walnuts, considering that the tree is "extinct." Maybe they're thinking of the American chestnut, which is nearly extinct. But black walnut trees are all over the place here in rural Indiana, and after my recent experience, I may go back to harvesting my own!

American Black Walnuts vs Canadian Black Walnuts.
American Black walnuts are considerably milder than Canadian Black Walnuts. I was disappointed in the flavour.
