Caldwell Flash Bang, Target Hit Indicator with Impact Light System and Easy Attachment for Shooting, Shooting Sports, Target Practice

I purchased this hit indicator to use in conjunction with the Caldwell AR500 steel target and mount kit to use at my homestead gun range. I placed this setup on a T-post at 300 yards and in the bright Texas daylight it is easy to see and verify hits. The LEDs are compact but extremely bright The design is very simple and effective and low profile to help avoid direct hits on the LEDs themselves. Eventually I know someone is going to have a direct hit on the exposed LEDs so the fact that it only costs $30 is awesome. Quick heads up if you have the monthly Amazon warranty plan (which I do) and you accidentally damage this hit indicator you can get it replaced for free no questions asked ! Worth the $15 monthly fee and it covers all past, present and future purchases.

So far a good experience. I attached them to head top edge to lesson chances of bullets striking the LEDs but even lowering the height to reveal less of the LED helps but still gets a hit once in while splitting off the top plastic lip. I wrapped the edge with strips of gorilla duct tape and it really helps hold unit together. You will lose some of the green LEDs to hits but the damned thing survives and works beautifully. I use them in indoor IDPA matches with swing steel and has been a big enhancement to the pistol match. I want to get some out on the rifle range in the future. I don't even bother switching them off between matches. Use a butter knife to separate them from the velco backer to move or replace. Buy a spare.

These are a game changer, at a reasonable price. If you are shooting long range or have limited sight of your steel target, these are great. I am a long-range instructor, and these make spotting hits at over 1000yds a breeze. They are tough, we have had some that have damaged LEDs from bullet strikes and the other lights continue to work. Tough, affordable device that aids in more effective training. Also makes the job of the spotter much easier !

Love these things. Works every time you hit the target, just like it should, and had no problem seeing it at 400yrds in direct bright daylight. Makes shooting even more fun

Was originally looking at the Hornady HIT but numerous bad reviews and odd mounting options led me to the Caldwell flash bang. At $170 less than the Magnetospeed T1000 I thought this little unit was worth a try. I've had Caldwell gear over the years and they've always been good for the price. This unit fits in the palm of your hands, not too big, not too small. It is designed to mount behind the steel target with about an 1/8" lip, with most steel being 1/4" to 1/2" that means this unit should not get destroyed from the splash of bullet jacket fragments that spray out from impact. On the face of the unit is an octagonal Velcro hook & loop section and the box comes with two Velcro pads with sticky back (which you would stick to the back of your steel target); that means out of the box you can only apply the sticky backs to two targets; however, you can always buy more sticky back Velcro pads (from Amazon or almost any local hardware store) for almost unlimited target application. The back of the unit is sealed with (4) 2.5mm hex screws and the package comes with one 2.5mm hex (Allen) tool. The 2.5mm hex screws are almost 1/2" long and the threading is fairly tight making for a long chore to remove all four using just the supplied tool (I ended up using my Milwaukee powered screwdriver with a 1/4" 2.5mm hex bit to unscrew and then re-screw back in until close, finishing off with the hand tool). The unit calls for (3) AA size batteries and other reviewers are saying they last for months so I decided to use Energizer lithium AA batteries hoping they'll last even longer and less risk of corrosion.What I'd like to see Caldwell improve:1) The hex screws are a pain and require a proprietary tool to administer in the field, I can see someone forgetting the tool when they go to their range and the battery dying, without that tool there is no swapping batteries so maybe a Phillips head design would be better as many of us carry multi-tools with Phillips head options.2) Even better than a Phillips head would be a toolless design or make the battery compartment itself toolless with a snap slot or similar.3) Offer a two pack at a small discount.4) I'd like Caldwell to put in some strong neodymium magnets into the face of the unit. Since the majority of application for this will be on "steel" targets the magnetic application would allow quick and easy placement from target to target without the need for Velcro which tends to fade over time.5) Offer a rechargeable unit maybe even with a small solar cell on the back for even better long-lasting performance.

Makes those long range hits visible even in heavy wind if you can't hear the impact. Very bright and easy to install. Comes with extra velcro for reinstall.

Velcro peeled off from the indicator(not the target) the glue didn’t hold and sent it flying. Target is 5 inch 3/8 ar500 held by chain, shot at by 6.5 creed at 300y . Would be fine with .22 and probably .223 or maybe with a larger gong.
