I think you should check on the BMW website to find their recommended lubricants--this oil was recommended to me by Kia for a 1.4 diesel engine

Shell Helix Ultra is a very good brand of oil which I use myself. However, refer to your car handbook to check the recommended viscosity range. If you don't have the handbook refer to the Shell Oil Finder website. A quick look for the E39 2.5L turbo diesel (2001-2003) on that site recommends 5W40 but be aware that that engine requires 7L. No DPF so no concerns there! Hope this helps.
