Review: Excellent tool for us - Our son, who is just under 3, has always slept through the night, basically since he was two weeks old, so sleeping has never been the issue. At some point a couple of months ago he just started getting out of bed earlier and earlier. So we figured we'd give something like this a try just to get him to stay in his room a little longer. We followed the suggested way to present this to him, as a special present, read the book a couple of times, and that was it. He took right to it, understood the concept of staying in bed/room until the light turns off, and now every morning comes in and tells us that he waited until his Sleep Buddy was off, very proud of himself. We just make sure to refer to it as his Sleep Buddy, like a companion. About the product itself, it's slightly smaller than what I was expecting but not a big deal. It gives off a very nice blue glow that's comforting, and it's nice to be able to change the level of brightness. The clock isn't the easiest to set, but once you figure it out it's no big deal. As others have stated having a true battery backup, like a couple of AAA or AA's would really help because our son has unplugged it a couple of times and brought it in our room with him. And when you travel with it you're stuck resetting it. Otherwise I would highly recommend this to anyone to give it a shot! Review: Great product! - I bought this product because my 27 month old daughter was climbing out of her bed consistently between 2-3 am. I would hear her door open and before I could even put my feet on the floor, she was at the side of my bed. At first I tried walking her back into her room, telling her that it was still night time and she had to go back to sleep. This sort of worked but then I usually ended up falling asleep in her bed and then waking up again only to stagger back to my own bed. It was becoming a pattern that I wanted to stop and so after several weeks of interrupted sleep, I went searching for a better solution. I found the Sleep Buddy, read some of the reviews which all seemed very positive and thought it was worth a try. When the package first arrived, she was very excited because it was a "surprise" wrapped up just for her. She loved the idea of the Sleep Buddy and was very excited about setting it up in her room. I can't say that it worked right away though. For a few weeks, she still showed up by my bedside in the middle of the night but at least with the Sleep Buddy we could go back to her room and I could point out that the light was still on and she needed to stay in bed. It's the same message I tried to relate all those nights prior but for some reason seeing the light really seemed to register with her. It took about a month before the idea totally sunk in and I could see a difference in her sleeping pattern. I also tried to make a really made a big deal about the light EVERY night to get her used to it and I think that really helped. It's definitely not an overnight fix but if you are patient, it will work. Oh and we use it for naps too and it works great! My only complaint is that it's not the easiest thing to set. It should be as easy as an alarm clock to set but it's not and I struggle with it each time I've had to adjust it. If it weren't for that issue, I would rate it 5 stars. Other than that, I highly recommend the Sleep Buddy, it's an awesome product!

Finally!
Finally! My son is sleeping past 6am! He's a "high needs" child (a nice way of saying he's stubborn and doesn't want to miss anything), so sleeping for our family has always been a huge struggle. He started waking up before 5am ready to start his day. It was exhausting because before that regression he regularly woke at 5:30, which was bad enough, but 5 was just terrible for my husband and I. Desperate for sleep, I ordered the SleepBuddy, skeptical it would work for my high needs kid, but willing to try anything. I loved how it came wrapped as a present and with a storybook. He LOVED opening it. My son wanted me to read him the book three times the first night we tried it, and we were reading it multiples times before bed every night for a while at his request. Unfortunately, we received it two days before going out of town, and being in a strange place was too much for him to try to understand the SleepBuddy. It took a while just to get back to what it was before we left. I would say after a month or more, he finally got it. Now he says, "SleepBuddy bluuuuuue" before bed. I can't say that every night he sleeps perfectly, BUT if he wakes up at 5 I go in there and tell him his SleepBuddy is still blue and he goes back to bed sometimes not waking up until 7 even though it's set for 6. For my son's temperament, I would say that is hugely successful and borderline miracle. I should mention we started it just before he turned 2. Most nights he sleeps through the night just fine and wakes up after it turns off. I didn't intend to use it for naps because that's a whole other struggle since day one, but he does follow it for naps, which used to be an hour and now stretched to more. I know 6am is still early for most families, but let me tell you, the extra 30 minutes makes all the difference for us. My biggest issue is the setup, as others have said. It does take a while, but honestly, I don't even care anymore if it means he sleeps better. In future models, a battery backup would be great, but it definitely shouldn't keep you from buying this. The light is also a little too bright for my kiddo. He's pretty sensitive to lights and sounds while sleeping, but I put a "blankie" on it for night time and now it's just part of our routine. Again, shouldn't keep anyone from trying this. If my sensitive sleeper can do it, I feel like most kids would have pretty good success as well.

Stopped working after 5 months
The unit itself was great. Easy to use. Easy to program. Was exactly what we were looking for - a timed night light for sleep training. But the plug on the unit never seemed to fit/work right. And now, 5 months after purchase, unit won't hold a charge and won't stay on.

It works! :)
Okay, so let me say that this light really does work and it is a great way for children who can't tell time yet to understand when to go to bed or get up....but it just hasn't worked perfectly for me! I have 3 year old twin boys and we've had mixed results. One of my boys really gets it and whenever SleepBuddy comes on, he yells "stay in bed" and does it. My other little boy, however, says it, but doesn't do it. We read the story that comes with the light every night for the first two weeks and we've done the sticker chart with rewards (which is hard when you have one that follows through, one who doesn't and they share a room!). After four weeks, they're doing pretty good at night. We've had a few of nights where the one little one hasn't followed the rules, but overall, nights are good! In the mornings, they do wake up early sometimes, but they play quietly in their room and wait till the light goes off at 8am and then knock on the door for me to let them out. Naptimes aren't working very well, but this is not the fault of the SleepBuddy. It has more to do with the fact that my boys just don't want to take naps anymore! :) So to address a couple of things mentioned by other reviewers: Yes, it does have a tiny display, but I wear glasses and have bad vision and have no issue with programming it. They also have instructions on the inside of cover, so I haven't found it hard to program at all! Also, it was mentioned that the SleepBuddy does not retain its settings when unplugged and again, this seems untrue. We had a power outage a few days ago, and the SleepBuddy light came on and went off when it was set to do so, just like always. I did have to reprogram the actual clock, but I had to do that for all my digital clocks around the house, including my own alarm clock. The only drawback I see with it is that it has to be plugged in and doesn't have an off-plug option. It would be nice if it was rechargeable or at least had the option of a battery (so we could travel with it), but overall that is my only complaint and the main reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5.

Really Helpful!
My son (2-1/2) has always been an early riser. He has also always been difficult to get down for naps or bedtime - it is as if he feels like he's going to miss out on all of the fun. We put him down at 7:30pm for bed and when he was in his crib (and couldn't climb out) we would hear him wake around 5:15am and then go back to sleep until between 6:00 and 6:30. Over the spring he learned how to climb out of his crib and so we switched him to a toddler bed. After the switch he started waking up at around 5:15am and getting out of bed and coming to get us. We would try to get him to go back to sleep in our bed, but that was ridiculous - he laughs and rolls all over you (totally a morning person). We got the Sleep Buddy in mid-August (he turned 2-1/2 on Aug. 3rd). It has been wonderful! He got the concept immediately (although he didn't follow it the first morning he did on the second). It turns on at 7:30pm and off at 6:30am. Since we have used it I've noticed that he once again sleeps until between 6:00am and 6:30am, but he will wait in his room until 6:30 and then come to our room and announce proudly that "he did it" and to "come check". We use the Sleep Buddy Reward Chart and he gets a sticker on the mornings that he meets the Sleep Buddy requirements (he's already earned a Percy and a James train - we are currently working on Gordon). We've had a few set backs, but it has been easy to get back on track. We also use it for nap time and to alert him that it is bedtime. It is very useful because the Sleep Buddy gives mom's alert that "it is nap time" some credibility. It isn't like he runs and jumps into bed, but he goes alot more readily than before we used it. I think this product is awesome! At first I worried that it was too much of a training device (like I'm training my son like a dog). But honestly, I think it gives him more control. He wakes up at 5:15am and sees that the light is on so he knows that it isn't morning time, and his mind can relax enough to go back to sleep. The difference in his attitude from waking at 5:15 to around 6:15 is HUGE. He is so much happier and not as frustrated in the mornings. I did not find it difficult to set, and it is very durable. We have it on a high bookshelf with the cord tucked behind, but on the 3rd morning my son reached behind the bookshelf and pulled it down and unplugged the cord from the Sleep Buddy. Then he came to our room and announced proudly that the Sleep Buddy was off (kids are way smart and definitely get the concept). I went to check and explained to him that he was not allowed to pull the Sleep Buddy down - that it had to sit on the shelf and that he couldn't have a sticker that morning because the Sleep Buddy has to turn off on its own. That was a month ago and he hasn't pulled it down since (no damage to the Sleep Buddy or my son from the fall).

no battery?
I just received this product two days ago. The first night we got it, we didn't use it because we thought it needed to charge overnight. Tonight, we unplugged it and were excited to start using it only to figure out that there is no rechargeable battery inside. It has to stay plugged in to work. In fact, there isn't even a temporary memory to remember the time settings once you've taken the time to set it. I am floored that a product meant to help toddlers who get out of their beds and have free reign in their rooms has to have a cord attached! Can you say choking hazard?!?! We're still desperate to see if it works, so maybe I'll give a better rating after we spend our precious parent time tacking the cord to the wall and go through the teaching process. Another minor complaint...after one time in my daughter's hands, the bottom cover that provides access to the clock was broken. Not very child resistant on that piece. It's not a huge deal, but annoying enough to mention. A couple of good things to mention: it came wrapped like a present, making it very exciting for my daughter; and when I posted a question to their FB site, it was answered within an hour or so.

Great idea, but concept lost on energetic 2 year old
I loved the idea of this product and was so excited to receive it. I love that it comes gift wrapped for your child and comes with a story book about how to use it. I was convinced it was going to solve all my problems. My daughter turned 2 in April and we were keen to take the sides off her crib and turn it into a toddler bed. With our other 2 children the process had been so easy. Child number 3 had other ideas. We would spend an hour every night getting her to stay in her bed while she thought it was great fun to keep getting out and running around laughing. I would receive nightly visits at around 2 and 5 in the morning where she thought it was time to get up. The Sleep Buddy arrived and unfortunately the problems continued. Every night we read the story, asked her what it was for, asked her if she knew what to do when the light was on. We constantly reinforced the message and she knew exactly what was going on, but she just didn't care! It was much more fun to be out of bed, so after 3 months of really trying and trying to get her to stay in bed we decided she wasn't ready and put the sides back on her crib. Maybe we will try the Sleep Buddy again in a couple of months. Its a great product, but it is no match for a willful 2 year old.
