Bought this for my daughter who's taking German in college. Great basic vocabulary. Nouns show the correct article (der/die/das) which I prefer to providing (m/f/n) after the noun.

This book is absolutely amazing to learn German vocabulary. It is an import from Germany and Langenscheidt is an authority on the German language. The free audio download is worth the price of the book alone. There are tons of excellent example sentences that a person would actually say. I cannot recommend this book enough to someone trying to improve his German vocabulary. I own nearly every German vocabulary book I could find and this is a gem!

Not what I was expecting. I guess I somehow got the impression this was more like a workbook or exercise book. I am a beginning German learner and this is probably too advanced yet for me but I will hold on to it for the future.

This is not a dictionary. It is a 200 page classified list of commonly used German words. Also it is a bit confusing as the contents page of topics is English first as shown in the "Look Inside" sample but the individual sections are German-English which is not the order implied on the cover. The book may be useful but serious students will need a good conventional dictionary as well.

I don't usually write book reviews on this site, but in this case I feel compelled to do so. I am teaching myself German and have had to assemble the learning materials to the best of my ability (and budget). This book is easily one of the most fantastic resources I have yet come across. The book itself is laid out with superb clarity and is a pleasure to look at (in true Langenscheidt style). The vocabulary is well chosen and fairly extensive, but most importantly, words and expressions are placed in a clear context within excellent sample sentences that enable beginners to start using them at once. These sentences have the additional advantage of extending the amount of highly useful vocabulary to be learned here even further than the headwords themselves. However, perhaps the most important feature for the beginner is the set of downloadable audio versions of every single example in the book, i.e. 8 hours of mp3s. These are INCREDIBLY beneficial. You can put them in your audio player and listen to them, soaking them up at your leisure. You can listen to them before you look them up and use this activity as a comprehension exercise. You can repeat them for pronunciation practice, learning them by heart if you feel inclined. In addition, you can examine each phrase as a self-contained miniature grammar exercise and work on your verbs and declensions by substituting words and inventing similar phrases for yourself. To be able to get your hands on all of this precious material for such a moderate price is an absolute godsend for German learners! In your quest to learn German, this may quite easily be the best purchase you ever make, so my advice is to buy it immediately - you will NOT regret it.
