How many extra inches does it expand to, when fanned out?

Quick question..what are the two plastic rods for that were in the packaging? Can't seem to find any info on them nor any use for them.

Hello, they are meant to make the 2 ends of the carrier rigid. If you don’t use them, the carrier will collapse inward. If you look closely, you’ll see zippers close to the inside edge of both the end sides. Unzip & insert the rods. When the carrier is not in use, you can take them out so the carrier folds up more easily.
