My 5yo daughter has shown a real aptitude and love of maths recently and this book has been perfect for complimenting her learning. Whilst she is in year 1, and this book is aimed at year 2 children, she is still able to understand the concepts and it has given her an opportunity to prepare for next year. Whilst she still needs help reading the exercises to understand the material, she is able to follow the exercises easily. The exercises are well laid out with good use of colour. The exercises are bite sized, allowing her to finish a section at a time. And as parent you can be reassured it follows the KS1 curriculum. There are also audio exercises linked via QR codes in the book which help reinforce the material. At £4.99 (at time of review), this is excellent value.

My daughter is in Y2 and this book covers the topics they do at school in a similar fashion so it is easy to pick up and continue as and when required. Some of the tasks require a bit of thinking but they are written logically and are easy to understand for this level and in line with the curriculum. There are also QR codes for additional audio tests in keeping with the SATS that will follow later. For me the illustrations seem like wasted space but provide interest and engagement - for under £5 this is decent value for nearly 80 pages worth of material.

This is a practice workbook for Year 2 Mental Maths. It follows the National Curriculum, so should be relevant for all primary school children at the appropriate age (approx 6 - 7 years). The book is well presented, and well laid out. The questions are clear. Where pictures are used, they are in colour. There is an index of subjects at the beginning, and the answers to the questions at the end. There are 4 mixed progress tests as you go through the book. Finally, there are 8 audio tests available by pointing your phone at the QR codes at the top of the page. Throughout the book, you write your answers in the spaces provided, and an adult can mark them. At the bottom of each page is a 'had a go', 'getting there', and 'got it :-)' summary smiley - useful if you need to identify areas where you should go through a page a second time. I ordered all 5 of the Mental Maths series, and have been really impressed by all of them. Price is reasonable. Thoroughly recommended.

They are well designed and easy to understand, and will help children and parents to engage with each other while improving their mathematical understanding and number skills. In a way, they help parents bring maths into the home in the same way as reading is practised at home. I am looking forward to working through these books with my grandsons. The material is based upon the national curriculum, and seems progressive and logical in its approach. The audio tests (you scan a QR code with your phone) help children get used to what to expect in the SATS tests at school, and are illuminating for parents too. I include a picture of the preamble and a sample page from the book. Overall, I think these books are excellent, and are just what is needed to improve mathematical skills in children (and perhaps parents too).
