Excellent Game - Remote Play on Vita makes it a must buy!
You get a lot of value out of Assasins Creed 4 Black Flag. There are a ton of things to do in This game. There are a lot of different side missions too that are actually fun. You can play it for hours and hours and still not be bored. Definitely the best PS4 game I got, and I got a decent amount of them. A lot of people reviewed this game but I want to concentrate on the Remote play Feature of this game that works if you have a PS4 and a PS Vita. Remote Play is a feature that allows you to play a PlayStation 4 game away from your Television and on your PS Vita screen. Very Cool. There is nothing gimmicky about this feature and if you have both you will definitely use it because it works soo good. However Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag works better than most games that use this feature. I have tried remote play with Battlefield 4 and it works great as far as the connection, but the screen is a little too small to work with BF4. This is not the only reason it doesn't work as well. The PS4 Controller has a touchpad L2, R2, L3, & R3 buttons that a PS Vita does not. Instead what the Vita has to compensate is a touchscreen and a rear touchpad. On Battlefield 4 for example L2 & R2 which is the 2 further back triggers on the PS4 controller are delegated to the top of the rear touchpad. L3 & R3 are the buttons you push down on the PS4 Control sticks and they are delegated to the bottom of the rear touchpad. All of these buttons are used frequently in most games and they are pretty hard to hit on a PS Vita. This Basically makes playing BF4 on a Vita very hard and something you probably wouldn't do. However for Assassins Creed 4 the L3 & R3 buttons are accessed at the bottom corners of the front touchscreen and are much easier to hit. L2 & R2 take up the ENTIRE back touchpad and again are much easier to hit because of this. These change of controls makes a world of difference and make AC4 seem like a game that was made just for the Vita when you are using it. Also to access the map which uses the Touchpad on the PS4 controller is accessed easily on the Vita's Touchscreen. As far as the connections between the Vita and PS4 go I have my Playstation 4 in the Basement and use the remote play when I am in my Master Bedroom which is all the way up on the 2nd Floor. The direct connection to the PS4 (which is the default way remote play will work) was not good at all. Just too far away from the PS4 to make a good connection. However the connection over the Wi-fi was much better. My only problem was my router was also in the basement so it would sputter every now and again. I hooked up a Unifi Wireless Access Point on the 2nd Floor and now it works perfectly. Very Very rarely will it slow down and if it does it is for a split second. This feature makes this game and the PS4 be truly next generation. I basically feel like I got 2 games for the price of one with this one.

Not ground-breaking, but very fun.
AC IV is not by any means the greatest Assassins Creed to date but it is a huge improvement over AC3 and for PS4 owners, it is arguably the richest gaming experience of all the available launch titles. Pros: The ship-to-ship combat is very fun, offering upgrade incentives and varying degrees of challenge to the player. Kenway's ship is upgradable by looting resources from enemy ships and upgrades are necessary to fight larger ships with more armor and firepower. Upgrading the ship takes a significant amount of looting and treasure hunting, but it is fun and never felt like work even though it's quite repetitive. Game-play in AC IV is very smooth and the graphics look excellent for an open world game with basically no load times. I had almost no issues climbing, jumping, running, or swimming throughout the game, although the controls while swimming underwater take a bit of getting used to. The multiplayer content is great. I have played every other AC title and never played multiplayer on any of them, so I was very pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable multiplayer is in AC IV. So far (early 2014) this multiplayer experience has provided me with more replay value than any other game for PS4. The scavenger hunts are always one of my favorite parts of any AC title and AC IV has added some new treasures to find across the pirate infested Caribbean. My favorite things to chase down are the sea shanty's which attempt to fly away as you approach and once captured, they provide your crew with a new song to sing as you sail the open sea. The portion of the gameplay outside of the animus is unique, without giving away any spoilers I will say that you are coerced by a mysterious man to steal data from the Abstergo office and deliver it to some familiar allies from previous games. The weapons and combat great, offering you killing power and mobility that you're used to from AC titles but in a new environment. Cons: The story follows Edward Kenway, a pirate who finds himself mixed-up with assassins and templars in the Caribbean Sea. Edward's loyalty is really only as good as the gold it provides at first, but throughout the game that changes as he get's more involved with the power struggle between the two secret societies. Edward does not develop any lasting relationships with other characters which leaves me as a player quite indifferent to who he is or who the other characters throughout the game are. The story will not be anybody's favorite part of this game, and would have docked some stars if the open world environment didn't pick up the slack. Also Kenway is not really an Assassin, which doesn't affect the gaming experience but it does cause some detachment from the over-arching conflict that is present in other AC titles. Climbing back onto the ship gets to be a little tedious as Kenway will find many reasons to stop the ship throughout the gameplay and unless your near a dingy on the the beach you have to swim out and climb up the side of the ship many many times. This didn't really bother me much, but it would be ideal if there were a sort of lift (like you might find in the cities to propel you to the top of a building) to assist you out of the water and onto the deck of the Jackdaw. The multiplayer is in need of patching, I have been playing on a consistently for about three months following the release of the PS4 and loading the multiplayer menu for AC IV still causes the game to freeze on a regular basis. Matches will also sometimes get a bit buggy as players come and go during the character selection, but this is more due to connectivity issues than the game itself. I have posted on Ubisofts forums about these issues and am still awaiting a fix. As with all Assassins Creed titles, there is very little danger to your character. I wish it weren't quite so easy to stay alive during the fighting in Assassins Creed, but it's also fun to be nearly invulnerable when surrounded by enemies. If you own a PS4 and you want to have some lasting content on your new console, I recommend this game over all the other launch titles for the PS4. My 5 stars would have been a 4 stars if this game hadn't come at a time when the PS4 was desperately starving for more content.

One of my favorite games, ever
I'll skip over the major points that have been said by most other reviewers and just give a few minor ones that stood out to me personally. -- This (may) apply only to next-gen, but the graphics....wow. Especially great after you take over a ship and everything brightens for a few seconds or at that midday time when colors are so clear. Looks incredibly sharp. -- No glitches! The map is enormous and I've run into maybe 2 glitches at 98% completion, and none that have interrupted gameplay (once a guard was stuck in a rock...not a big deal). -- Getting of the main story line is as much fun or more as continuing with it. I've never bought a game where I didn't finish the campaign first. I've logged somewhere between 50 and 60 hours so far and have happily been engaging in ship battle after ship battle just for fun. -- The characters! At first I was disappointed that pirates like Charles Vane and Blackbeard had small parts (imo) but now I just appreciate the attention to detail Ubi gave even small aspects of the game. -- I loved the way the story built over time. Maybe it was because I took so much time between main story missions to tool around in the world but I felt some suspense leading up to....let's say Edward's big discovery so I don't spoil anything. I wish other characters were explored more, like James and Anne. -- The shanties are awesome. Even though the method to collect them doesn't make much sense, they're still fun. Much more exciting than other collectibles anyway. Keep them!! -- The varied islands and whatnot are really immersive. Background noises change from location to location - at the beach you hear seagulls and waves, in the jungle you hear insects, etc etc. They vary enough to keep things interesting without being unrealistic. -- The upgrade system for the Jackdaw is great. As an added bonus, even when you're done with the game in other aspects, you have incentives to keep upgrading because those Lengendary Ships are pretty hard otherwise. Honestly, I didn't feel like much of an "assassin" in this game, but it wasn't lacking in any way. The present day, as always, was just not as....fun....as the rest of the game. But, still an interesting backstory. Also, if Ubi takes away naval battles, I think the series will suffer. I am trying to think of cons but the ones I can think of are really tiny. There's something for everyone in this game, except maybe FPS people and they have enough games to make 'em happy. There are a ton of plantation/warehouse raiding opportunities but they're optional. After every successful boarding of a ship you have 3 options, and choosing one plays one of the same 3 cutscenes each time. It's repetitive but only lasts a couple seconds. Also, the reward from the Mayan Stelae is lame....but other than that I love this game! Highly recommend!

Fantastic Game
I'll admit, I've never played any of the previous Assassin's Creed games. After about 12 hours gameplay on Black Flag, I realized I've been missing out on a great gaming series. I never really knew what to think of the game prior to getting this, so my review may not be as reliable as a seasoned Assassin's Creed player. I'm hoping people will pardon a beginner's opinion, though. The game story and graphics really made me feel I was in the realm of the Colonial West Indies. The level of detail put into the history of the story is incredible. The game has many different areas to explore and side-missions to accomplish. I think the characters are well-developed and very believable. There has been very little cliched dialogue. I'd be hard-pressed to say this game is boring. The covert-styled fighting can be repetitive, and the AI for enemies and civilians has been a hoot. However, the covert operations are pretty intense and make up for the rather dim enemies I've encountered. When you get into a fight, you'll often be confronted by multiple enemies. The great thing about combat in this game is the number of different ways to dispatch foes. I've had a pretty easy time learning the controls. I think the ship controls are probably more tedious to remember, but I suppose this is just related to switching between controlling characters and ships. So, there may be initial confusion for other people who have never played this game before, but hints are available throughout the game. Moreover, an in-game user guide is also available and explains how to control the character and other assorted interfaces, particularly your pirate ship. Overall, the gameplay is nothing short of majestic. You couldn't hope for a more immersive game. If you are like me and enjoy games like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption or open-world Final Fantasy games, you'll love Assassin's Creed Black Flag (and I'm sure the previous Assassin's Creed games). I decided to learn more about the series. I watched gameplay of the previous games on youtube. They all looked really good and I encourage any prospective buyers to at least do the same if they have not played any of the Assassin's Creed games. I certainly plan on investing in past and future Assassin's Creed games.

This game is amazing.
I will start my review with the good parts of the game and then end it in all the bad, issues, or problems I had with it. The Good 1. The game's graphics to me are amazing. Throughout my 7 day's of playing this game non-stop, I just couldn't get over the fact that the graphics were so amazing. When they showed a close up of you or someone else, you can see the stitching in the clothes or the wrinkles in the leather and all that sort of detail. I found myself time and time again just sitting at a eagle point and just looking at the scenery. This game has to be one of my most favorite looking games by far. 2. This game lets you go anywhere you want at anytime. The fact that in this Assassin's Creed game they give you a huge open world to sail around is just fantastic. Sail to it once and you can fast travel there from now on but even with the fast travel feature, I still found myself sailing to most of my locations as long they weren't across the entire map as it takes a good 20 minutes to actually sail to one end to the other Just looking at the map you can see the main locations (25+) that are either towns of cities or other things like Mayan ruins. Soon after you start playing this however you quickly realize that there is much more than just those towns and cities. There are tons of tiny islands to explore and tons of secrets to find out. I've easily played more than 100 hours of game play and I still haven't discovered everything. 3. There is tons of stuff to do in this game. Ranging from treasure maps, crafting, upgrading your ship, Assassin missions, hunting, exploring, collecting things to unlock others, and a whole bunch more. Even near the end of the game they give you 4 legendary ships to battle and destroy. Even though you can go to these ships at anytime you want, its highly suggested you don't until your ship is fixed up with top notice upgrades which takes a good amount of time to collect. I actually enjoy this game because hardly anything is just "Given" to you like most games now days. You legitimately have to put a good amount of game play in to even get the best stuff. Sure you craft level 4 armor right off the bat my killing 2 great white sharks, but its the fact you need to craft all 4 to actually get the max amount of health. Which requires you to visit many different areas of the game, as some animals are specific to one area. 4. Out of the animus. When you're outside the animus there is loads of secrets to figure out and unlock. Most of them accessible more near the end of the game. Its a real joy to know whether your in or out of the animus you will have something to do. I've even spent a great amount of time out of the animus collecting all the things there is to collect and I know I'm only about half way done. This area would be a lot longer, but I dont want to spoil anything because 99.9% of the time you're out of the animus its story related. Never the less, you have the option to go in or come out of the animus at anytime like AC3. My suggestion, save most of the exploring when out of the animus towards the end of the game as you will have a lot more to explore. The Bad 1. Repetitive. Most of the time in the story I found it was mostly follow, eavesdrop, kill. Which is "Ok" but they could have done better and not made it so repetitive. 2. 2 outfits had some, problems more or less. I found that the main outfit and the pirate captain outfit both had their underarm cloth just bouncing up and down as you walked. Not noticeable when running, but really bothered me. I strongly believe the pirate captain outfit is one of the best looking outfits in the game but while walking it just looks stupid. I cant even tell you how many times I considering changing my outfit to something i didn't like as much just so i didn't see the bouncing of the underarm cloth. 3. A very specific mission where you have to follow, eavesdrop and kill glitched out and I had to replay this entire mission. Although it only happened once, this mission took about 45 minutes to do once and maybe 30 minutes the second time because I knew how to do it. It's one of the ending missions so I'm not going to ruin the story for you by telling you exactly how I think it was caused as it contains many spoilers. 4. This isn't really bad but more of just a little disappointment. Although you can customize your ships sails, wheel, and statue thingy at the front (what ever its called) I was disappointed I couldn't customize the color of the ship itself or upgrade it to be bigger. 5. If you buy the extremely cheap (I believe its $1.99 could be $.99) add on that gives you Altair's and Ezio's sails, front statue thingy, and swords. It will render almost all buy-able swords pointless to buy as long as you just use Ezio's swords. I had these from the beginning of the game till the end and never had 1 problem and noticed all swords that you didn't have to unlock though doing all of a certain kind of mission were useless and less powerful... Maybe by 1 more damage 6. One gun in specific has a range of 6.... this gun is overpowered because of its range. All other guns have better damage by far but range, nothing comes close. Their cheap and i've used them throughout the entire game. I just have to say these guns need to be weakened, I've been able to shoot someone from 40-55 feet away which back in the 1700's was extremely good. 7. Dart somehow can be shot just as far as the pistol I talked about above, if not longer.... how the hell? You're using nothing but a tube, dart and the air from your lungs... this shouldn't be possible when you're being compared to a gun....Not complaining, I mean its really nice being able to make people go crazy from 50 feet away but this shouldn't be possible. Other than the minor problems i had, its an amazing game. this is worth the money and honestly suggest getting if you have a ps4.

If you enjoyed the Ezio games, but hated AC3, give this one a try!
I had played this game on the PS3 and loved it. I have been a fan of the AC games since ACII and have played every game in the series through the hits and misses. AC3 nearly turned me away from this franchise, but Black Sails brought me back. The game play is similar to AC3 with some tweaked combat, free run and naval controls, but if you played AC3, this will feel familiar, but improved. The graphics and landscapes of the Caribbean make all the other prior games in the series seem bland and stagnant. Lust forestry, cities from Nassau, to Havana, to Kingston and small fisher villages and Mayan ruins, the imagery is inspired and breath taking. And the open sea... wow. The naval battles which were a novelty in AC3 have become a strength for this game. You can capture ships, fight entire fleets, and even wage war against forts. The actual assassination missions and story lines are very similar to prior games, no surprises here, but still fun. Hunting is also back from AC3, including harpooning of whales and sharks. The score is fitting for the game and the voice acting is some of the best in the series. And for once, the non-animus sequences aren't quite as frequent and as annoying as some of the Desmond sequences in the AC Ezio games. Lastly, the biggest improvement to this game is the plot line. Is this story original or going to wow you? No. The reason why I liked this story compared to prior installations was that Edward is a simple and easy to relate to "protagonist". The heavy philosophy of the Assassin's Creed games makes its way into this game, but it is less in your face. This adventure is a little lighter, and a little more straight forward, which I appreciate for this time of game. Pros: Amazing graphics, simple, straight forward story, likable protagonist, great naval battles. Did I mention AMAZING graphics? Cons: Familiar missions, fight mechanics (may not necessarily be a con, but no original content here)

Assassin's Creed is back to being amazing
First off, I'm probably the biggest Assassin's Creed fan there is. I was on board with the franchise since day one. I bought ever single Assassin's Creed game on launch day, full price and blew threw the games within a week to 2 weeks and then get all the collectibles, achievements and replaying so many missions just to get all the bonus content. I love the story, I love the gameplay and every game has been better than the previous... EXCEPT Assassin's Creed 3. That game almost ruined the franchise for me. It is actually the only one of the games I refuse to keep playing and reached around 60% in and gave up and re-sold on ebay. I read up on the story and saw youtube vids on what happened in the story but AC3 was just so bad, not to mention how the game ended was HORRIBLE. The only real thing I really liked in it a lot of the ship battles. Then comes AC4 and oh yes... so many ship battles. But also AC4 gives me the feel of playing AC2 again for the first time and I love the main character in this one. An assassin pirate ! So much yes here. I have the PS4 version so playing in 1080p, up-ed the graphics and textures for everything. Game play is smooth, 60fps most of the time and you can tell they really listened to the fans when making this game. But, they could have done better with the graphics and maybe do a polish on the gaming engine because the same glitches and bugs that were in previous games are still in this one. Like NPCs floating above the ground while standing or laying flat and running up against invisible walls sometimes. But these bugs are not game stopping and do not hinder much from the fun. Took me a while to get the hang of actually fighting naval battles (which is a major part of the game) but once I got the hang of it, its definitely my favorite part. Great way to make money in the game, compared to AC3. The way you make money in AC3 was such bull-jank. Anyway, this is my review for the single player. I have not played mutliplayer yet but planning on it within the next few days. MUST OWN if you are remotely a fan of the AC series.
