Takes A While To Flatten Out The Shipped Roll
The mat is thick and quite large for most board level repair jobs. As an example, it dwarfs the size of a PS5 mother board. One reviewer complained of a strong chemical small, but it did not bother me - and some is to be expected...it's a plastic mat! In addition, another complaint was for an oily surface on the mat - not the one I received - no oil. The safety a a 1-megohm resistor for the wrist strap to the mat was confirmed with a ohm-meter, and the strap is well made. However, you will have to fashion yourself a method of connecting to ground as only a ring lug is supplied and not an AC socket ground connector. The wrist-strap is well made, and socket to connect the mat is via a snap that can be removed (which is good as it is bulky and can get in the way for non-static sensitive work). The only issue I have is that the manufacturer rolls up the mat into a narrow tube - too narrow. After several days it still has some slight bends in it so that it doesn't lie completely flat. If another week goes by, and it is not completely flat - I'll hit it with a hot air gun as it is supposed to withstand a fair amount of heat. If so, I'll post an update on the results of the process. It is still a nice mat for the price

Does a good job of keeping your delicate components from nasty ESD.
Pros: • Effective ESD Protection: This mat provides excellent static dissipation with surface resistivity between 10^6 to 10^8 ohms, ensuring safe handling of sensitive electronic components. • Heat Resistant: With a heat resistance up to 180°F, the mat offers protection for your workspace against moderate temperatures, although it is not suitable for direct contact with high-heat sources like a soldering iron. • Durable and Multi-layered: The mat features a multi-layer composite structure, including a dissipative layer and a conductive layer, providing efficient static dissipation. • Large Size: The 17" x 25" size offers ample space for working with PCBs, electronics, and other components. It’s perfect for small workstations, offering flexibility for multiple uses. • Well-Constructed Accessories: The mat comes with a grounding kit, wrist strap, and accessories that are of good quality, contributing to its reliability. Considerations: • Mat Tends to Curl: The mat tends not lay flat initially, which can be annoying. It requires some effort (like reversing the roll or using heat) to flatten it out. It does flatten out over time if left an a warm room on a flat surface for a while. ________________________________________ Summary: The HFS(R) Anti-Static Mat offers solid performance for anyone working with electronics, providing reliable ESD protection and a durable, multi-layered design. It’s ideal for small workspaces, offering generous space for electronics repair and assembly. While the mat’s size and quality are generally appreciated, its tendency to curl and limited heat resistance may be concerns for those working with higher temperatures or requiring perfect flatness. Overall, it provides great value, especially for hobbyists and professionals looking for an affordable, high-quality ESD mat. ________________________________________ Final Thoughts: This ESD mat provides excellent static protection and durability for electronics work, with a size that fits well in most workstations. While some minor issues like curling, it still remains a great choice for those needing effective static protection at a reasonable price. ________________________________________ Amazon Vine Program: This is a review of a product received for free via the Amazon Vine Program. Great for Professional or Hobbyist
I'm a retired Coast Guard Electronics Technician and this electronic work mat is the same quality we kept in our shop's during my service. Made from thick rubber, with grounding wrist strap, which attaches to the electronic mat, then has a grounding wire. The ones I'm use to have the banana plug that you could plug into the ground of any outlet. This came with an eye connector. So I just screwed it to the metal frame of my garage, which is clad to my ground rods. The single complaint is that whatever rubber or shipping material they use has a horrible smell. It game me and my girlfriend a bad headache after opening the package and leaving the mat and box within the closed bedroom for more than 10 mins. The smell dissipate from the room in no time when I moved the mat to my garage and I haven't noticed it again. If you're worried about static damage to any electronics you might be piddling with, I would recommend this to you!

Don't buy
Zero stars. Worst smelling piece of plastic. Left over night in the garage hoping it would off gas a bit and be usable. Seemed to get stronger. Whole garage smelled horrible. Didn't bother trying to rewrap it. Straight to the trash. Even leaves the smell on your hands after touching.

Exactly As Described
I have long wanted one of these ESD mats and I was glad to find one at such a great price. I built myself a new PC on this mat a few days ago and it gave me peace of mind and extra security since I'm a relatively novice PC builder. My new gaming computer is now in use without any issues at all. For those wondering how to use it, it's pretty simple. The long wire goes on the center screw on an electrical outlet (the one that holds the plate in place) to ground it. Then you wear the bracelet on your left wrist. I have huge wrists and it fit me well and was easy to put on. If you should forget you're wearing it, it's only snapped onto the mat and will break away with a good tug. It's easy to snap back on again. I'm sure I'll be pulling this mat out and setting it up many times in the future for repairs, upgrades, and builds. The only thing I didn't like was the strong smell. I really wish I'd opened it and aired it out a few days ahead of time. After a few days, the smell was gone. Some materials are just like that. It's not a ding. Just a heads up to anyone else picking one up.

Probably should not be sold with this strong of a chemical odor.
This product probably should not be sold with the strong chemical smell that it emits. 'tried washing with soap & water, baking soda, deodorizer chemicals. no improvement. left out in fresh air for over six hours, still smells. The odor may subside in time, but if one needs to use it soon, I chose to wrap top in wax paper and place another hard surface mat over it. There is no scent after doing this.
