A great digital thermometer for candies, is not oven safe
Purchased as a candy thermometer for fudge this year after my mercurial one broke. Easy to clean and has a pot clip. Accurate, and runs on two watch batteries with an automatic off feature when not in use. Multiple temperature settings and will beep when done. Do NOT put this in the oven. While it works fine with the clip as a candy thermometer, if used for meats you cannot put this in the oven or over a grill. You will need to skewer the meat and wait for an accurate temperature and then remove it and continue cooking as necessary.

Truly Superb Candy Thermometer !
This candy thermometer is perfect for its intended purpose. I have read the many complaints about the clip, but don't quite understand why that is enough of an issue to downgrade this fine thermometer. I have always made a lot of candy and prepared various sugar solutions for French pastry and candy cooking. I never, ever used the clip on any of those thermometers. If you leave the thermometer clipped to the edge of the pan, you will never get a really accurate reading for delicate sugar preparations. The temperature on the side of the pan is usually cooler than in the center and the clip prevents you from throughly stirring and scraping the bottom and side of the pan. Just stir the pan really well, submerge the tip of the thermometer in the mixture, making very sure to NOT touch the bottom of the pan(this will cause a false reading, as the bottom of the pan next to the burner will be much hotter than the mixture as a whole), and Voila!, you will have a very precise temp. reading, every time. The thermometer is easy to use and is long enough that your fingers will not be burned by the hot steam while you are submerging the therm. in the hot mixture for a reading. I highly recommend this thermometer to anyone, it measures very accurately and allows for perfect candy and sugar solutions during each use. The only thing that would cause this Therm. to malfunction would be human error (see above review). And no, I do not work for or have any connections to the manufacturer. I just really like this piece of equipment.

Very convenient thermometer
I bought this thermometer to replace an older model from CDN which had started behaving erratically due to a fault in the sensor cable. This model has no cable and just clips directly onto the side of the vessel. It works very nicely and is convenient to use. One complaint though is that when I am standing at my stove looking down at the thermometer clipped onto my pot, the display is not easy to read since the contrast is poor at this downward viewing angle. I find I need to bend down to read it clearly. It would have been better if the display was tilted up at a slight angle. Once while using it the unit reset itself during use! It was at about 60'C and suddenly switched from Celsius to Fahrenheit and reset the set point to the factory default! This has not happened again so I hope the unit is not faulty. Perhaps a loose battery connection?

Works as expected
I've used this thermometer only twice so far and it does the job. The dial type of candy thermometers that I used before require several inches of syrup depth in order for the thermometer to get a reading; their thermosensors were actually a couple inches above the tip of the probe. Since many candy recipes have only a few cups of sugar syrup being cooked, you'll need a good thermometer with the sensor at the tip. I checked the accuracy of the CDN candy thermometer with boiling water and it was accurate to within one or two degrees. Unlike other reviewers, I had no problem reading the numbers on the thermometer while it was hooked on the pot; there are settings for it to tilt back and forth. I agree with the other reviewers that you'll need a pot without a lip for the thermometer to stay put on the side. A straight sided pot is also better. I bought such a stainless steel 2 quart pot from Walmart for $30 and its perfect for most of those candy recipes. I read the complaint from other reviews about the lack of an off button. But fudge recipes require at least an hour to an hour and a half for the cool down to 110 degrees; this thermometer is meant to stay on in the pot to monitor this. It doesn't bother me that there is no alarm for the cool down. It will turn off automatically when the temperature stays below 104 degrees for one hour. I also like that you could set ANY target temperature and it would alert three degrees below; great for deep frying. It could also do a good job as a meat thermometer; the sensor at the tip makes it easier to place the probe right where you need it at the exact center of the food unlike other meat thermometers where the sensor is somewhere above the tip and you could get a false reading that the food is done. The only negative I see would be to find the replacement of the tiny batteries.

Accurate temperature reads!
This thermometer is great. I used to have a manual thermometer and it was hard to read when my toffee was ready. This thermometer beeps at you when it gets close to temp so you know you’re almost ready. It’s a great thermometer as far as the read goes, the clip isn’t as sturdy as I would like and sometimes the thermometer falls off since it’s top heavy. There’s also no “on/off” button, it just turns off automatically after who knows how long. It is accurate and my toffee comes out perfectly every time using this thermometer. I recommend it, even if you only make things and need it occasionally.

Works great for a boil alert.
Bought this because I always can't hear when the water boils in the kitchen since I have an induction stove. Bought this and set to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Beeps to let me know the water is boiling. Highly recommend!

Faulty thermometer!!
I bought this to make candy making easier. The clip is garbage. It literally sprung upwards and off the pot causing hot caramel to splatter all over my stove and onto my hand. Thankfully I wasn't burned badly. I had to use another clip to keep it in place. When it reached 240 the screen changed to celcius and only showed partial information. It then went completely blank and left me scrambling to find another thermometer at a crucial stage in my caramel. This thermometer is garbage and doesn't read above 240. The face stayed partially blank for several hours and was hard to turn back on. Don't buy this thermometer.

Purchased for yogurt making...
Purchased for making yogurt....I started looking at thermometers when my digital model did not survive a hot dunking, and then I accidentally purchased this one by hitting the 1 - click button. I did not cancel the order because I was almost positive I would be in need of a new one and I really liked some of the features of this one, and obviously, it doesn't matter if I am making candy or something else. I love and appreciate the fact you can set your goal temperature and an alert sounds when close to that temperature. This allowed me some freedom to move around in the kitchen, rather than hover over a pan of cooling milk to eyeball the current temperature. The clip is very welcome, but I mistrusted it somewhat and periodically I would push the thermometer down until the tip touched the bottom of the pan and then pull up slightly to assure myself it was positioned correctly. The clip does seem secure, but I did this several times anyhow. This is a great thermometer, arrived quickly, and would work with pretty much anything as long as the thermometer itself is not exposed to high heat. There is a heat shield, but I had a great deal of difficulty getting the probe to go through the opening, but will have to figure out a way if I need to use this for some reason. The probe is long enough for most deep pans. I believe it is accurate, but have no real way to verify this. If I were a candy maker, I would certainly test this out before having to use it for something critical....maybe bring a little syrup up to the soft ball stage to check.

Great product. No problems at all.
Did temperature test in boiling water. Temp set to 212. Warning went off as it should at 209 degrees. Mine does not screech loudly as another reviewer said and it flashes red light as it should. My sauce pan has a lip and the clamp held fast..no movement. Screen did not go black at this temperature (212). Haven't gone higher. Screen is small for those of us with not so good eye sight. I just turn this around so I can see the screen better. I think this works better in a little taller pan. TIP: If the probe slips in the holder just bend in the part underneath where the teeth are that holds the probe. It tightens it right back up. Then push the probe back in to the holder. Now it's nice and tight. Pulling the probe in and out when cooking/cleaning stretches the teeth part. Easy fix!!

Can't fault it, seems solidly build and the temperature presets make life easy
I wanted a digital thermometer to experiment with making confectionery, and this has ticked all my boxes. -Construction The thermometer seems sturdy, I have used it a couple of times now and it can definitely stand the heat. As the clip is not fixed to the thermometer, it clips comfortably to any sized pan, and the guard provided keeps any splashes away from the electronics. -Preset Temperatures The thermometer is preset with the temperatures you want for working with sugar, and you can scroll through these by just pressing one button ('mode'). This makes life easy, no programming required and you don't have to remember the temperature of the stages (soft ball, hard ball, etc.). It starts to beep as the set temperature is reached, so you can take your eye off the gauge safely without burning the sugar. -Conclusion If you are looking for a reliable, well priced candy/sugar thermometer, this comes highly recommended! It did take a while to get here from America though, and the tracking number provided didn't work. This wasn't a problem for me, and it came within the (generous) time window given, but if you need something urgently then this might be worth bearing in mind.
