Could you use wood instead of charcoal to cook in this?

I use wood regularly, even smoking by burning charcoal or wood on the right with meat placed at the far left..

How well does it control the heat?

I'm not the griller of the fam. but my husband said it controls better then a spanx on a big chick! lol So....I guess that means Great!

how sturdy is the construction of this BBQ. Does it feel flemsy or solid when you open the hood is it like a tin can or solid and will hold up for 20

It's not cast iron (I thought it was) but the metal is 2X thicker than something that is half the price. Bottom line is that it is more expensive, and you are getting a better product. Just to let you know, Lowes carries a similar one for $50 left. Different name, but same specs. I found that out after I had used my Dyna-Glo.

How does one clean out the used charcoal and ash? Is it an easy process?

VERY easy. There is a pull out tray that catches all the ashes and you just pull it out and dump it. I actually dump it in my grass for fertilizer.
