STAEDTLER Mars Lumograph Pencils in 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B + Free Mars Plastic Eraser and Sharpener

Just received these and love them. I tested them against Pitt Matt pencils and suddenly realised how light my blacks have been. Mars Lumograph are very dark and a lot less shiny that Pitt matt. I'll definately be using them for final blacks in drawings, in fact I have already. I tried it out on one I'm finishing and suddenly its alive with a full tonal range. I have yet to see what the colour match is like with normal graphite (the pic in question being more mixed media), but have had a test with the whole set and they would probably work well just on their own.

Had never used these before but have them a go as was struggling to achieve dark tones with standard graphite and wow! Will be repurchasing when needed.

I've just taken up drawing as a hobby (so not a expert or anything!) and having done some internet research wanted to treat myself to some nice new pencils. I want to try hyperrealism, or at least make my drawings look as realistic as possible, so got the 12 set of Faber Castell 9000 - and these so that I can have some really black pencils, and a wider range of values to choose from just as im starting out to see what works for me. First up - the pencils which came in the tin are HB, 2B,4B,6B,7B and 8B,different to the description, but Im happy about that as I didnt want 2 2Bs/4Bs. Ive attached a photo of them tried out against the FC 9000's - you can definitely see a difference. So Im glad I bought these because now I have a much wider range of values to work with as Im just getting into my new hobby. I saw a youtube artist video recommending use of a Faber Castell polychromos black pencil alongside her FC9000's to use for the bits she wanted to be really black. I have a set of FC Classic coloured pencils so tried this out next to them for comparison - its a good idea to use if you only have normal graphite pencils, but I found it to only be about as black (in my untrained eye) as the 6B in this Staedtler Black set, and even that isnt as 'black' as these new pencils, it seems a bit of a warmer black, if that makes sense? So on a positive note, these pencils - all 6-do have blacker values compared to the FC9000's and are worth buying for that reason. On a negative - its only really the 4-8B's that are really what I would have bought if I was buying them individually, because to me, testing them on my cheap paper, the HB, 2B and 4B dont seem much blacker/matter than the FC9000 6,7 & 8Bs (they still contain some graphite I think) - thats why I didnt give 5 stars for value for money, because you can probly buy the 6,7&8B black pencils - the ones that really stand out as being something different to what you get in a normal graphite pencil set - for less than the price of a full box of these. Still glad I bought them though, to experiment with - its always good to have a bigger range of things to work with and try out when youre learning something new. And glad theres no duplicates in the tin like it says on the description.

These pencils are exceptional. They are very black, not grey and leave no graphite shine.I do not use these for skin or shading because they don't blend out well. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are parts you don't want to smudge, like eyelashes.I use caran d'ache grafwood for my skin as they are very soft and blend out well. Not great for detail though. Then I use Faber-Castell pitt matte pencils for most other parts of a drawing.Using all 3 brands enables me to get the best of them all.

These pencils don’t have that shine that many others do. That is what I wanted. They are more black as well.

Ho acquistato queste matite Mars Lumograph Black perché ero rimasto molto contento della grafite 8B della stessa marca, contenuta nell'ottimo set da 12 Mars Lumograph "normali", anch'esso in vendita su Amazon.In effetti, questa grafite Mars Lumograph 8B è particolarissima. Molto nera e quasi "grassa", è poco cancellabile come se fosse una matita colorata ed in breve è diventata la mia preferita (allego la palette dell'intero set, a lato di un piccolo bozzetto che feci tempo fa per esemplificare l'uso delle varie gradazioni di grafite).È allora che sono venuto a conoscenza di questo nuovo tipo di matite della Staedtler, sempre Mars Lumograph ma di tipo "Black", anch'esse in grafite ma di colore molto più nero del normale per la presenza di una più alta percentuale di carbone; vedendole in vendita qui su Amazon, le ho acquistate per curiosità.Fatta esclusione per la 8B del set Mars Lumograph "normale" che è del tutto simile con la 8B di tipo "Black", le altre gradazioni non sono da confondere però, in quanto a resa grafica, né con quelle in normale grafite né con le matite a carboncino.Delle prime non hanno quei fastidiosi riflessi lucidi avendo una finitura opaca, e delle seconde non possiedono la friabilità propria del carbone.Sono pastose e poco cancellabili come se fossero delle matite colorate nere, ma a differenza di queste sono sfumabili anche con le dita, hanno una mina resistentissima e molto affilabile, e soprattutto sono di quattro gradazioni diverse: la confezione comprende due matite di gradazione 2B, due 4B, una 6B e una 8B.Io le uso spesso e con piacere perché queste matite Black consentono agli amanti di questo tipo di tecnica, semplicemente ripassando un sottile strato sulle zone fatte con la grafite normale dove si vuole che sia reso un nero più profondo, di attenuare anche l'effetto lucido tipico della grafite.Queste Mars Lumograph Black sono un complemento anche per chi ama disegnare con il carboncino: le rifiniture, i particolari e le ombre più scure possono essere aggiunte con profitto dopo la stesura del fissatore ottenendo risultati molto convincenti.Allego tra le immagini il confronto tra la matita Lumograph in normale grafite di gradazione 8B e la sua "gemella" 8B Lumograph Black: entrambe hanno la mina di diametro maggiore delle altre gradazioni: ben 4,5 mm., mentre per le Black 6B, 4B e 2B il diametro è di 3,6.Le Mars Lumograph Black sono contenute in una pratica scatola metallica con una funzionale cerniera apribile (molto comoda per coloro che disegnano sovente anche all'aperto o in altre svariate condizioni ambientali), ed inoltre, al di là dell'abituale eleganza, riportano intelligentemente su ognuna delle sei facce la gradazione (caratteristica comodissima per un disegnatore).Consiglio a tutti gli appassionati di disegno, professionisti e non, l'acquisto delle Lumograph black, perché la resa è in definitiva qualcosa di diverso: diverso dalle grafiti, diverso dai carboncini, diverso dalle matite colorate. Si ha un ibrido di cui davvero si sentiva la mancanza a livello grafico.P.S.:Ora che sto scrivendo noto che ne hanno prodotto un kit in cui le matite Lumograph Black sono tutte di gradazioni diverse, avendo aggiunto la HB e la 7B: le acquisterò non appena "nanizzate" queste.Spero di esservi stato utile.

I am a beginner to watercolour. I decided I'd like to try watercolour pencils.After some research, I felt the Staedtler brand looked like the best quality.I was not disappointed. The colours are vibrant and easy to use. My intentionwas to use them to outline artwork before using my watercolours, instead ofusing pencil. They worked amazing. 5 stars.

Enjoy drawing with these, they are smoother than the Staedtler Tradition pencils. Not a professional here, but really like these pencils.
