If you have a mix of imac's running thunderbolt 2 & 3 connections respectively will the sonnet solo10g-tb3 ethernet adapter be backwards compatible?

You need to use a powered Thunderbolt hub to enable Thunderbolt 2 machines to use this adapter and apple thunderbolt 2 to 3 converter. I used a startech thunderbolt 3 docking station part #tb3dk2dppdue and an apple thunderbolt 2 to 3 dongle / adapter.

Would this work with an older imac via thunderbolt2 via an adaptor with tb3>tb2 ?
