Silva Vehicle Compass C58 for Car and Boat

Bought this for our Campervan conversion. It works a treat on the Dash with no interference from anything in the interior of our vehicle. It should've been around £99 but I couldn't justify that for the occasional use, so clicked on the 'New and used from...' option and picked one up with a damaged box for £25!Silva is a well known trusted brand in Compass/Navigation. Quality piece. Comes with wires which when connected to vehicles 12v illuminates the glass red. I changed the LED to blue to match my Dashboard.

Before fitting into position, move the compass around dash board. Any stray magnetic field under the dash will disturb the pointer. I also checked the compass position be comparing with a Silva charting compass. before final fitting and adjustments with brass tool supplied. I use a draw string cloth bag, to cover and protect from sun when not in use, it can get quite hot. For my photography, its good to position my car facing the sunrise and sunsets, save getting in and out of the car. Now that my partner has the 'hang' of it, she doesn't get lost as she navigates us through the Highlands. Enjoy

Mine has a manufacturing flaw where they’ve installed the compass the wrong way around. If I face south, the compass card closest to me says north. Likewise east-west etc.This would be correct for a normal top-down compass one would use with a map, but is 180 degrees the wrong orientation for a dash-mounted vehicle compass viewed side on.The compass is correctly magnetised (north points north) but the side-on viewing window means that that gives you the wrong bearing: if you are facing south, you are viewing the compass from the north side, and the compass card that shows through the little window says “N”, even though your bearing is south. They needed to invert the compass card headings for this vehicular format.Very foreseeable and silly error for a compass manufacturer to make. Hopefully a replacement will be properly oriented for this product application. Other than that it’s a good product and I would be glad to have a correct one that doesn’t give me 180 degrees the wrong bearing.

I ordered one and found it to be demagnetised. It was replaced without quibble but the same thing happened. Cancelled for full refund. I suspect both were from the same batch and were killed in a customs scanner. Should have been checked before being sent out - at least the second time round. Looks pretty, though.

Accuracy is poor. Certainly on the item I received. Wiring is flimsy. Disappointed.
