Minutes. Not very long. Needs to be plugged in to a 12 volt source for continuous operation. You can hard wire it , which is necessary for the parking mode to work. Turns itself on when the car key is turned on or off when the key is turned off

It starts recording when you start the car and the unit powers on. You don't have to press anything.
