Does this filter work with tannin in the water? Also, how about brackish water?

Accepted Answer

Sawyer's claim for the filter is that it removes 99.99999% of all harmful bacteria and 99.9999% of protozoa.  Viruses are not included nor are other impurities mentioned.  I have written to Sawyer to ask about tannin and brackish water and will reply again once I receive a return message. What is the shelf life for this?  Used and properly cleaned or unopened.

Accepted Answer

This filter is advertised as up to 100,000 gallons by Sawyer.  When you begin to notice a decrease in flow, I recommend back flushing with potable water using the included syringe.  I normally keep an ounce or two of 90% isopropyl alcohol to sanitize the drinking tip and any tubes I may use when setting up different systems.

After use and before long term storage (especially if you filtered a lot of biologically questionable water), it is recommended to run a sanitizing solution of bleach/water (1tbsp plain, unscented bleach to 1 gallon water) through the filter then rinse very well with potable water, shake out vigorously and allow to air dry for several days before capping and placing into storage.

An unopened filter should have indefinite shelf life unless it is subjected to extreme temperatures, hot or cold.

Question 3

What's the total weight of the full system? (Including the filter, tube, syringe, and pouch) It seems the listed 2 oz refers to the filter alone.

You are right about the 2 ounces being the filter only-that is what Sawyer advertises.  The entire unit, inside the packaging is 4.8 ounces. I cannot take it out to weigh the items outside the packaging as I would need to destroy the container to get them out.  I am guessing the plastic covering weighs less than an ounce so the entire unit probably weighs about 4 ounces.

Question 4

Has the Sawyer Mini gone through End of Life testing in laboratories to ensure that it will ACTUALLY filter 100,000 gallons of water?

Only thing I can find is on the sawyer website is the lifetime warranty so if you read it the will fix/replace the filter for life as long as you dont modify the filter in anyway or open the housing or run juice or drink mixes thru it they will replace it  the 100,000 gallon guarantee is to tell you you will have it for life you will lose it beforeit breaks I hope I was of help you can find all the tech data sheets on there website
