Can the backrest be uninstalled, or since you are the mfg, not even put on?

I don't think so. The back rest covers an opening in the front facing end of the trunk. You'd have to find some way to cover that significant opening if the back rest is removed.

Where do the wires hook up? I don’t want to take more apart than I have to.

Actually, don't worry about it. The LED lights quit on mine within a few hours. They're the weak link here. If you still wanna try........splice them into the wiring for the tail light.

What diameter tube is the chrome rack ?

I'm not sure of the precise measurement but I'd say about a half inch.
