Is there an instructional booklet included on how to properly use the products, experiments that can be done, etc?

No but it's pretty self explanatory, the basic use is to teach proper hand washing techniques. You choose either the lotion or the powder use a small amount on your students hand have them rub together and then let them go wash. When they return you can use the flash light to see how "well" they washed. Be sure to check nail beds and any cut or scrape. I make my students rewash until it's all gone. Hanoi would be surprised how many students it will take 3-4 times.An alternate idea is to have 1 or 2 students use the GloGerm and not tell anyone. Then after a time period or activity tell them that it was an experiment of how easily germs are transmitted and see how many people came into contact with the "germs".You can also use the lotion on a door knob or pencil sharpener as the point of infection and see how many students after a class period are infected. Do you need to make the room dark to see the "germs" glow? Is the UV light strong enough to use in a sunny classroom?

You do need to have a dark area the kids can go to in order to see the "germs" better. You can use a box, or closet area if it's too hard to make the whole room very dark.

How do you decide between the powder and the lotion? What are the advantages of each?

The powder is really messy and the lotion is not. They both work the same.
