Finding Magic in the Ordinary
'Deewar Mein Ek Khidki Rehti Thi' took me into the quiet, surreal world of Raghuvar Prasad, Sonsi, and their humble, magical life. The novel gently reminds the reader of the bliss of slow living, free from television, phones, or constant distractions. There is only nature, human goodness, animals, and all living things; even the non-living things feel quietly supernatural. There are no dramatic events or turning points - just the ordinary life of Raghuvar Prasad in his modest chawl, with friendly, all-knowing neighbours; a school where he teaches mathematics; a curious and caring department head; children; an elephant and its mahout; a boy who hides in a tree; and an astonishing life glimpsed through a small window. Sonsi, his wife, enters this small world and shares its magic with him. Adding to this gentle world are Raghuvar Prasadโs parents - selfless, considerate, and deeply loving - whose quiet presence and unconditional care further anchor the story in warmth and humanity. The life Vinod ji paints on both sides of the window is vivid and lyrical - especially the world outside: fragrant trees, an old, loving woman, the pond, fireflies, birds, monkeys, and pathways hardened with compacted cow dung. Even a simple act like fetching water from a hand pump feels refreshing and deeply satisfying through his words. The conversations, too, are gently amusing, where people hear something different from what was said, and sleep-talk feels almost dreamlike. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy magical realism and social fiction. Reading this after Vinod Kumar Shukla jiโs passing felt like an act of both grief and discovery - mourning a voice we have lost, while discovering a world that will continue to live, softly and endlessly, through his words.
