They may be used, independently, for Refrigerator Use Exclusively! Post up notes. Use them just like any 6 refrigerator magnets you know and love. Or ... and THIS IS THE *T*O*M*Y* *M*A*G*I*C* which makes $17 an ULTRA FAN-TOY-STIC BARGAIN for Young and "Old" Children Alike: Here's why. I have purchased a few sets of these over the last few years (2009-2013) for friends' kids, neices and nephews, from ages 1.5-8. Of course small children need supervision with small parts, but that's nothing new. Basically no matter how young or old, these are a winner. My parents keep a set on their fridge (50+) because they find them fun and basically everyone who steps into the kitchen fiddles with them. Even babies can enjoy watching the motion of the changing colors and patterns. The largest gear has the motor and the green arrow is what controls the motion; in the central position, it's stopped, flick it either direction and the gear will turn clockwise or counter-clockwise. Set non-motorized gears against the motorized one, and you suddenly have a functioning system. Each gear has a magnet on the back that is strong enough to prevent it from sliding, but not so strong that small hands can't easily re-arrange the gears in any of a number of patterns to get different motion and combinations. The motor is strong enough to move all the gears, but not so strong as to pose a pinch hazard to small hands. This was a concern of mine on my first purchase, but it's not a worry. These make a nice gift because you can be almost certain the family doesn't already have three of them sitting around gathering dust. Multiple sets can be combined and used together and it only enhances the experience. Also, if a piece gets lost, the whole toy is not ruined. So long as you still have the motorized gear and at least one or two others, it's still a great toy. These are also good for "smaller spaces", as they can be stuck to the fridge or a metal cabinet and don't necessarily need to be "put away" after each use. Plus, this allows for play in the kitchen (within sight) without toy clutter on the floor. As for durability, they hold up very well to being dropped, stepped on, even tossed to see if they will magnet to the fridge mid-flight. Although I wouldn't necessarily classify them as an "educational toy", these also help teach kids how gears work - sometimes you place them in the wrong orientation and the gears will try to work against eachother and stall out. But since you can maneuver these while in motion, if you make a wrong move, they lock up instantaneously upon placing the gear, so kids can right away see their mistake and correct it. Just bumping the wrongly placed gear out or removing it, and the others start turning again. Battery life is phenomenal - even with periodically being left on for extended periods of time, and it just takes 1 AAA battery, so no special trip to walmart to search out that hard-to-find battery when it does go out. We use a rechargeable one in ours. Smaller hands might have a bit of a hard time with motor skills at first flicking them on or off because the switch is fairily low profile, not the clunky dials and switches they might be used to, so it's not the easiest to grip, but isn't that part of the point? To stimulate new skills? Watching an older sibling or parent using it, they are able to do it pretty fast! The price point is the biggest downside, but these are a quality toy that will last for years to come. Overall these are a phenomenal product and a great addition to any household.

Wow! My 18mo old niece LOVES her gears. The magnets are strong but she is able to remove them from the refrigerator door. Easy to clean and the colors are bright and attractive.

My son is 4 and autistic. He LOVES things that spin around and are eye catching. Also, he's a nightmare when I'm trying to cook, so I wanted something he could play with in the kitchen and not be tugging on me the whole time. These magnetic gears are perfect! They're darling and well made and he's really enjoyed them so far! However, you should be clear about what you're getting because the advertising isn't very accurate. Here's what you should know: Pros: - Magnets are really strong! They stick very firmly without being so firm that the kiddo can't pull them off himself. He is a fridge door slammer and these things stay put on the door when he slams it shut, even when they're turning! I love that. He has also stuck them on the dishwasher door and the oven door (not in use of course) as well. - Quality construction/durable. My son has dropped these numerous times and they haven't been damaged at all or shown any signs of functional impairment as a result. That's a huge deal for us as my son breaks a lot of toys... Also, the stickers that create the patterns seem very high quality and not something that will start to peel off over time. - Good battery life! We go through a lot of batteries in our house so it's nice when something lasts a while. - Gears rotate in either direction depending on which way to push the switch - Gears included provide a variety of "sights and sounds" to entertain and there is literally no wrong way to set them up which we both LOVE because it virtually eliminates frustration! He can use his creativity and play with them however he wants! Cons: - The advertising of these gears in the listing is not entirely accurate which is very disappointing. First, be aware that even though half the pictures show 8 total pieces, you're probably only going to get 6. Look for the pictures that show 6 in a set (main gear, big flower, tiny one with big eyes, small noise maker, medium size one with rotating oblong washer and a medium sized blue face with the wavy eyes that go around). That's the set. If you're hoping for the one with the piece over the eyes that flips back and forth or the one that rotates around different colors like I was, you're going to be disappointed. - Another aspect of false advertising is that there is no speed control button, at least not on the 6 piece set I received. There is right and left and that's it. Just one speed. It's fine, I just don't like being sold something on false claims. - My son really loves these and I want to buy more gears (of a different variety) but this is it! I've seen other sets that claim to be compatible with these but all the reviews say they're really cheap and the magnets don't hold at all. That's also disappointing. If you're going to advertise a set of 8 and only send 6, the least you could do is offer additional gears for purchase. Maybe they used to. Two other things to note that aren't necessarily cons but things to be aware of. The main gear does not turn off automatically after any length of time. It has to be switched off manually. So if my son runs off distracted by something else, I have to switch it off myself. I think it would be great to have an automatic off after 10 minutes but oh well. It's fine. There is a noise maker gear that indeed makes a loud sort of ticking noise that almost sounds like the gears are stuck or something isn't working. Honestly, it doesn't bother me in the least. I know others said the sound really grinds their gears (pun intended) but to me it's the sound of contentment. It's the sound of a little boy who is happily playing by himself and isn't tugging on my arm and whining or head butting my hip over and over again. In summary, these really are darling, well made, work great and my son loves them. It offers a lot of creativity. I really debated between giving 3 and 4 stars. I hate false advertising in any way. I think it's deceptive and irresponsible of sellers and disappointing/unfair to customers who spend their money. That being said, even though what we got wasn't exactly what was advertised, my son loves them and they really work well and are cute and fun! So, if I'm reviewing the actual product itself, I have to say we like them. Just be aware of what they are and what they aren't! I hope this helps someone else! I love this toy more than my 10 month old right now lol! He loves to watch them spin and then rip each one off of fridge and tosses it onto the floor (he’s at that stage right now). It’s such a cool toy and I know he’s going to LOVE it when he’s older!! It’s a lot of fun to move each piece, educational, and the magnets are very strong. The colors are so bright and really pop too! There is one piece that intentionally (pointed to in the photo) clicks when attached to the rest of the gears… that’s to get babies attention. If a customer does not like that noise, they can just remove it?? Anyway, we love this toy!

My 1.5year old loved it. Unfortunately it was less than two months before the magnets fell off of the main unit rendering it useless unless I can glue it back.

My toddler (28 months old) loves gears. We bought this set so that he could use it on the refrigerator as I cooked. He took to it immediately. The powered gear is the biggest of the set, but it isn't too big or heavy for him to carry around. He ended up putting the small face gear in his pocket and wouldn't leave the house without it for a few days. We liked that the gears' teeth are smaller than some of the other play gear sets, giving this one less of a "little kid toy" look. Our toddler, like most, is drawn to things that aren't toys first and foremost. The magnets are strong enough to keep the gears where they need to be, but even a small child can still easily nudge one across the metal surface to mesh the gears. I wish that there were more than four gears with this set (plus the powered gear). The four gears are a good variety, including the sometimes-annoying "clicker" gear. The only problem with the gears themselves is with the one that has a sold-colored cutout top with the teeth that spins over a fixed base with a colorful sticker. It's a mid-sized gear and the principle is good, but the execution is lacking. The cover wobbles sometimes, making the gears stop spinning and the motor click painfully. (Poor motor.) Then the kid (or you) has to figure out which gear is causing the problem, interrupting play. Or enhancing problem-solving, if you want to think about it that way. Bottom line: If your kid likes gears and being with you in the kitchen, get this set. If it's a success, round it out with the bigger set ( TOMY Gearation Building Toy ), which has a powered backboard for playing away from large metal surfaces. Be aware that each of the four non-powered gears in the refrigerator set is duplicated in the bigger set, though they have different decals.

This is not safe. The magnets fell off the back of the gears within minutes of first use.

Amazing toy. I have just bought second set, to have more cogs moving together. :) My daughter is 11mo and loves it. But only when she is older she will enojy it even more. Only thing I don't get why spread of prices on Amazon is so big. I bought cheap ones for 20, and they seem to be OK :)

Wer keine Angst um seinen Kühlschrank hat (Kratzergefahr) oder vielleicht ohnehin mit Magnettafeln 'arbeitet', dem sei dieses Magneteset wärmstens empfohlen. Ist in Bewegung einfach toll anzuschauen und schon für die jüngsten ist das Hantieren damit ein großer Spaß.
