This really works well
I bought this even though I already own a Harbor Freight power sharpener. I've sharpened a number of chains with the HF, and the results were ok, but it seems like it's too easy to use up the chains by removing too much material. Also, it's AC powered, so it's hard to use out of my garage. The Stihl sharpener has none of these drawbacks, and some other benefits. First, and most important, the Stihl sharpener simply does a better job. It takes a bit of learning to understand how to use it, but once you know what you're doing, the results are fast and great. Because all the guides are cut down perfectly to match the amount of sharpening on the teeth, the sharpened chain cuts like new. I was surprised to find that it only takes two or three strokes to put a great new edge on a dull tooth. This tool is exactly what you need I'd you ever dull a chain by accidently touching the ground when cutting through a log. It's fast and easy to touch up a whole chain. Despite instructions to the contrary, I didn't find it necessary to hold the bar in a clamp or vise. I wore gloves and held the chain and bar securely with one hand, and moved the sharpener with the other. It literally only takes a few seconds for each tooth. There are a number of informative videos on YouTube for using the Stihl sharpener. Make sure you get the correct model for your chains (there are three different ones) and learn how to use the tool. Your chains will always be perfectly sharp and ready to use.

Good quality
The files are very good in this unit and get a good feel how the are sharpening. Easy to hold and keep the angle right. Put the bar in a vice and rotate the chain as you work. Use a magic marker on one of the teeth to know where you started then move around the other side to sharpen the other side of the chain. Pretty fool proof and you'll get better after a few chains. Rotate the files once in a few chains to work a different surface of the file. Nice that the rakers get file down as you go.

Razor sharp loop
On a chainsaw loop (chain) there are a set number of teeth half are set right facing and half are set left facing. In order to sharpen your saw you have to file each tooth from the open side thru the pocket. Over time thru repeated sharpening the teeth get lowered and the rake allows less and less material to be removed with each pass which means you have to file the rake as well just the teeth. The rake is the front part on the tooth that ensures your saw is cutting just the right amount with each pass. If the teeth are lowered and the rake is not you will get saw dust and it will take a long time to cut. If the rake is to low then you will pull large chunks from the wood however your saw will bog down and not preform as it is intended. This 2 in 1 file sharpens the teeth with the round file and the rake with the flat file at the same time. Additionally the file itself has a picture of the saw which is guide meant to be held parallel to the bar which makes it very easy to ensure you are sharpening your loop correctly. I was cutting ash for cord wood when I noticed my saw (husk 455) was being overworked due to a dull loop and getting very hot. I had to stop cutting for the day or risk blowing the head gasket. I called the local small engine repair and they told me 1-2 weeks to get the loop back sharpened. This sharpener was recommended on youtube so I bought it. I pulled the file thru each tooth left and right 4 times, which took about 10 minutes and now my loop is ungodly sharp. Way sharper then the loop came from the factory and the rake has been lowered on each tooth. If you still pay to have your saw sharpened and or replace your loop when it gets dull you need to get one of these sharpeners it will save you time, money and prevent shop time. Love this tool.

Works well for the average DIY homeowner
I'm just a regular homeowner with a 16" electric Worx chainsaw. After doing some research, I decided on this unit to sharpen my chain. Having never sharpened a chain, I found it helpful to watch a few Youtubes to help me understand the parts of a chain and the sharpening process. Watching someone demonstrate this particular model was very helpful. It takes a little getting used to, but once I got over my hesitancy, the sharpening went well. I found that it sometimes skipped out of the gullet when pushing away from me, but that was due more to my inexperience than a fault with the sharpener. My chain was amazingly sharp when I was done and took down a small cedar in no time. I can see how this might not be the best choice for pros and those with multiple chains and saws, but it will save me time and money being able to do it myself. My only reason for the 4 stars is the instructions could be better.

An excellent manual chain saw sharpener
I do a lot of wood cutting each year--about 4 cords for our wood burning stove. I had a bench mounted sharpener which was very difficult to work properly. Saw this manual sharpener and decided to give it a try. It is excellent. Takes a while to get used to exactly how you should use it, getting the angle needed to attack each tooth. But I figured that out pretty quickly since the tool actually gives you pretty good guidance. Amazing how much better my chain saw works, producing beautiful chips instead of saw dust when cutting.
