A practical, empowering guide to managing and reversing prediabetes through diet and exercise, from a registered dietitianโnow revised and updated for 2024! Affecting 96 million Americans, prediabetes often develops into full-blown type 2 diabetes, one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Increasingly diagnosed by doctors, prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are elevated, but not yet high enough to be labeled diabetes. While diabetes cannot be cured, prediabetes can be reversed, so it is critical to take action at an early stage. In straightforward, jargon-free language, The Prediabetes Diet Plan explains insulin resistance (the underlying cause of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes) and offers a comprehensive strategy of diet and lifestyle change, which has been proven more effective than medication. With sections on meal planning, grocery shopping, dining out, supplements, and exercise, this book empowers you to make healthier everyday choices that can effect real change on your insulin levels and overall well-being. Review: Lots of useful tips - I have finished reading the book and it does have lots of useful tips. Book can be improved by including latest knowledge about prediabetes/diabetes cause/reversal. I recommend the book Life Without Diabetes by dr roy taylor to understand the cause/reversal of prediabetes/diabetes. Cause of prediabetes/diabetes was discovered after patients scheduled for bariatric surgery were on a low calorie diet for 7 days and reversed their diabetes seemingly without weight loss, but later it was discovered they actually lost a small amount of fat in their livers. Cause of prediabetes/diabetes turned out to be a small amount of fat stored in liver and pancreas which people can get rid of using any effective weight loss diet. People who have decades of diabetes might not completely reverse diabetes but health will still improve. Book also needs update on definition of obesity. We already know the bmi ranges of white people are not the same as the bmi ranges for asians. The healthy weight to avoid diabetes differs from person to person. For myself, thru trial and error, I discovered my healthy weight to avoid prediabetes/diabetes is around 117 lbs (bmi 21)(I am asian). When former president Bill Clinton did the dr dean ornish diet and dr caldwell esselstyn diet, he went back to his college weight. For many people, their healthy weight is probably their college weight. For a proven program to reverse prediabetes, I recommend going to the CDC Diabetes Prevention Program web page and download the free instructor and participant materials (for a 1 year program) which can easily be read in 1 hour if you are a fast reader, so you can do it on your own without an instructor. Many organizations offer the 1 year CDC Diabetes Prevention Program. Personally, I use an unrefined vegan diet with vitamin b12 supplement to maintain my weight, and I have normal numbers for cholesterol, hdl, ldl, triglycerides, fasting blood sugar, hba1c for more than 15 years already. Simple way to lose weight is eat low calorie density unrefined foods, avoid eating high calorie density animal products, avoid eating high calorie density refined chemicals like oil, as seen in the volumetrics diet of barbara rolls phd. I do cheat on my diet every now and then, and my fasting blood sugar does go up the next day if I cheat. Review: Just what i needed - Great book! I looked and looked for a fairly simple, straightforward book covering pre-diabetes. Having been on a low carb diet for several years and informed/interested in nutrition, I didn't need a "beginners" book...needed something covering my diet from a different angle. This book is it! The information is very, very easy to digest (pun intended), clear, makes sense doesn't commit to specific hardline notions. The charts are short, simple and easy. No recipes which is good. (Some of these books have 1200 recipes!) Best thing is it's "guilt free", doesn't mention actual weights or a huge amount of stats, no shaming, encourages going slow and doing self-care, talks to you not at you...love this book. I am so glad we found each other!

This works!!!
It worked for me, amazingly well.. By month 4, my glucose reading normalized, along with the high blood pressre and cholesterol. My A1C has dropped from 7.0 to 6.1. I'm looking for it to drop even more with my next reading. My doctor is elated. I'm off Metformin and one HBP med. The Dr. will take me off the last one soon. BTW, I also have released 44 pounds. It really took me about 3-4 months before I liked this new lifestyle, but now I'll never go back to my old ways. I have new energy and I now swim 3 times weekly. Swimming is something I hadn't done in decades. I also workout now. My weight loss goal is 100 pounds and I'm almost halfway there. I combined this plan with Dr. Joel Fruhmans diabetes plan. You have to make it doable for you.

Great read very helpful
So you get told at the doctor that you are prediabetic so what do you do....you find out more information on what your life is about to look like. Meaning what foods can I not eat or drink....No one wants to stay away from the things they love but at least there are books like this to help us make the change. Great read.

Comprehensive and Clear Cut Information
Being recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes, I was confused as to what that actually meant for my body and what I was to do. I read Hillary Wright's book as I was consulting my doctor and my own nutritionist and I found everything Hillary mentioned to be accurate and in agreement with my medical advice. I enjoyed Hillary's writing style, as I felt she was writing directly to me and I found it easy to follow along with her examples and facts. I often found myself using Hillary's analogies as I explained my recent diagnosis to friends and family, and they too found the explanations easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes or has a family member living with pre-diabetes. There are many tips of menu and food choice selections, so it is key that anyone who is serving food to a pre-diabetic truly understands what is involved with the diet. My entire family is now eating healthier thanks to Hillary's tips. Diabetes or not, it is a diet I believe all people should follow to some degree for healthier choices. Hillary's information about the abundant increase of pre-diabetes and diabetes in American society is mind boggling.

Take care of yourself
Lots of good info. Turns out I was not prediabetic but close. I followed the recommendations in this and the Fuhrman book "The End of Diabetes". Not only has my glucose level gone down, my weight and blood pressure have gone down too. My taste has changed, as well. Foods I loved give me no desire and for a splurge last week, I went to big name fast food joint. Yuck. I felt sick afterwards.
